Load temperatures look pretty good. Definitely no reason to upgrade from SB-E; but this is a very efficient CPU.

I wonder how it overclocks. If it clocks worse than SB-E it might not be worth getting.

Not even a valid overclock, check out the ram. Using single channel and clocked painfully slow. Not stressing the IMC at all.
It's definitely "valid," but certainly not in the context that most people are expecting.

So what will they sell this on, enthusiasts aren't going to upgrade to save a few watts.

People who want to use workstation class boards for more memory, but also want an unlocked multiplier to OC.

Honestly that is the only application i can think of.

Otherwise Haswell stomps it across the board.

Or someone who wants six cores, obviously. It is equal to SB E or slightly faster, and TH review of haswell
Showed that haswell clearly does not match a hex core in some workloads.

What business genius at intel thinks it is a good idea to sell a slower cpu (on 95% applications that wont use more than 4 cores) many months after a much cheaper, faster cpu has been on the market.

If they sold Haswell E now instead of Ivy E, I would buy it. I would pay extra for more cores and bonus of soldered/less temp issues ocing....but not when I can buy a faster cpu (95+% time) for 1/2 cost (months earlier).

They need to go back to selling enthusiast/performance near same time frame, and not have the enthusiast always 1 or 2 generations behind the performance. Maybe just do an enthusiast model on only tick or tock, but not both, and time it correctly.

Because the focus of that line is on servers?

maybe but 99.9% of cases a Haswell 4770k at 4.4 will match the Ivy 4930k at 4.8.

Sounds like someone is heavily exaggerating. Anyway, it depends on the game and for most folks LGA 2011 won't be worth the higher cost.

Besides which, LGA 2011 is more designed for workstations - for the applications it targets, it blows the Haswell away.

Going from a 4770k to a 3930k was a breath of fresh air for me... Haswell is a very frustrating platform for overclocking and keeping temps down.

Well for the cost of a 3930K you can buy two 4770K's and you get two chances to delid without mesing up One is bound to be at least a semi-decent overclocker...

Personally I don't see why they couldn't have brought the IPC improvements over from Haswell. The integrated VRM stuff requires a new socket obviously, but the actual CPU cores? At 4.5-ish GHz, a 10% performance improvement is worth about 450 MHz. So a 4.4 GHz Haswell matching a 4.8 GHz IB-E in lightly threaded apps/games is not unreasonable.

Looks like they got 4.8Ghz, although very high voltage needed.

From what I understand of the article, 4.6 GHz on air, 4.8 GHz with LN2, 5 GHz was not possible. Judging by their IBT temps, it looks like it uses solder, but suffers from the same "voltage wall" as Haswell and IB.

In past server/high end cpus were released at/near/before same time as mainstream. It was only more recently when they separated the platforms that the extreme/server lagged way behind.

I wouldnt buy the extreme version in past, since I could spend 1/3 money and OC a cheaper model to same speed.

Now that I would pay for an extreme with more cores and solder/better temps....they make it a silly purchase since extreme platform is always 1 or 2 generations behind in performance for 2x price.

They need to go back to old way, one platform, release haswell and haswell E within several months of each other. My guess is Haswell E enthusiast platform would sell quite well right now....Ivy E not so much.
