Yeah, I'm considering moving there. Some people I know are saying I should try moving there for a month or two to see if I can get a job. Me and these other people in SF know a lot of other software developers. So, if I moved there, it'd be high likelihood they could just pass my resume along up the chain.

Yeah, this is starting to become a worry.

Wait what?

If you already know a lot of software devs from SF, why don't they pass your resume up now?

They do, but they work for big companies that are notoriously hard to get into even if you get a resume passed along. That, or they work in companies that aren't hiring. (or hiring entry level)

OK. How is living there going to change that?

That's just the people I know currently. People I meet there could be of a wider background. I know maybe 10 software devs (or PMs, Directors, or whatever you want to call them) in SF/bay. Most of these guys are at hard to reach companies.

I'd have a chance to meet people who might not be working at top shelf companies and have lower (aka, not impossibiru) hiring standards.

OK.

Please tell us how you are going to meet hiring managers from these companies.

A lot of people who do the social activities I do in SF are software devs. (That's how I know the 10 or so I do know now)

Outside of that I'd like to go to some kind of developers meetup and connect with people there. I'd like to find some people who want to work on a project together just for fun/practice. (In SF, not here. Fuck here. It wouldn't likely help me get a job in SF and the opportunities here are so few in comparison)

Right now, I'm having a hard time coming up ideas that I can get behind as the only developer. I'm really bad at UI stuff in terms of design. So, that usually holds me back on my projects in a big way. If I can find someone(s) who have a good idea about design then I can focus on just implementing that design. (Backend stuff is easy for me and I just do it but the front end shit is what takes me forever and drains me dead)

Got paid today. WMK!

I get paid tonight.

Its so sad. I had to get paid for when I got stuck in Salt Lake City and watch movies for 5 hours. Then the shuttles at CES were way slow. So I had about 20 hours overtime last week.

Too bad I have such a shitty job.

Dude, I'm a mechanical engineer and I do back-end programming work. It's easy. A good UI maker is valuable, anyone can do the back-end work. You'll have to do better than "I only do back-end program work for 40hrs a week or less" to be a valuable employee.

But hey, what do I know, my company only writes custom coupled multi-physics modeling software from time to time...

You need to be more baller. Start by buying an M3 and $3,000 suit to go to interviews with. Offer the interview person a $3,700 bottle of wine before the interview starts.

On serious note, have you considered a career change? Or starting your own company? Lot of money in mobile games. Been wanting to learn that myself actually. You have to be a freelancer to make the real money though. Look at the game Flappy Bird. That guy is set for life now for spending about an hour or two one night coding a basic game with graphics stolen from Nintendo.

Tech is hard to get into now days if you're not running the show, programming even more so. Companies often outsource and/or relocate that stuff somewhere else. All the jobs literally go south.

If I lost my job I'd probably be looking at trades. You can't really outsource/relocate that, at least not till they make robots that can do electrical, plumbing, framing etc. Prefab houses are a step towards that but you still need people to put them together.

Don't move at a place just because there's a job you want, if you don't want to live there. Work to live, not live to work.

for every flappy bird out there, there are 1000000000 free games that don't make any money.

i know too, because i made one of them.

I gotta give the dude props for always coming back and responding and standing up for himself though, I will say that.

Meh. I don't give him props for living in a fantasy world.
