the online gaming community has always been full of elitist pricks and retards with big webdicks. i've had my share of disappointments, from being flamed for absolutely no reason at all from a bunch of japanese gamers (i'm korean) to high school punks who call me out because i don't play the game enough (basically my skills are at best mediocre at counterstrike and some kid says how much i suck and should go kill myself and then says how he probably gets more vagina than me because he's good at CS). simply mind-boggling.

online games aren't even fun anymore for this reason.

i hope i'm not the only one who feels this way. I used to play games after school for a little while as a stress-relief, not spend hours trying to hone my skills. if that's not a good reason to enjoy some leisure gaming, i don't know what to say.

Play on better servers?
Don't know what to tell you; just avoid them.

I dont want to sound like a wise-ass here but thats pretty much how I've always seen the online crowd. I dont think its gotten any better or worse since online gaming started. The only difference now is theres more games and more players.

I would suggest you go single player on those games or just stick to games that are ONLY single player. They tend to have more depth and quality of play anyway.

The online gaming idea was never that great to begin with. It just encourages folks to show us how incredibly stupid and disgusting they really are. Perhaps if you started some private games with friends and people you trust it might be OK. But you would need to know an aweful lot of decent people to keep it going for very long.

Play a game with a more mature player base (like Red Orchestra if you are into FPS, the game is harder than most FPS and far slower paced, which tends to cause younger players to shy away) on a well moderated server.

Your not alone. I just pick the people I play with very carefully. After trying to play WOW, by blizztard, I hated online gaming even more. Stupid X-roads is like Anands P&N.

I have like 1 friend I still like to play online with, if he is not online I usally don't even go online.

i feel similar. lots of people are just a-holes plain and simple. a lot them are kids who play practically 24/7.

don't forget the rampant cheating as well.

but i still want to play online games. probably because its really the only contact i get with real people other than my family or people at work.
i just need to find the right people i guess.

Yeah, I found one server that I liked on CS:S and stayed with it, that's pretty much the only online game I play now that I'm part of the community.

It also helps that I can admin-abuse people that are pissing me off.

QFT.

However, sometimes the best way to deal with difficult emotional situations is to avoid them altogether.

Sadly it's often just part of the landscape of online public server type play. A lot of poor character is displayed because people can act with impunity in most cases. As has been suggested, being a part of a clan in organized competition can improve your perspective part of the time, as well as LAN gaming or coop play.

One reason I liked America's Army was that the built in Rules of Engagement enforcement automatically dealt with at least some types of abuse, although where there are public servers we are always going to have to deal with the overall lack of civility in some measure. Although I've never tended heavily towards games like WoW, I do recognize the appeal of having the comradrie of those types of alliances, and believe that many future games will more closely define players within a context of persistent community, including games that are essentially fps based.

To the guy that said that online gaming was never a very good idea, I strongly disagree. I've been playing Tribes of one form and another for around 8 years now, and the potential of true sport is evident in that kind of team-based gameplay, and we can at least be hopeful for improvements to online moderation and anti-cheat support in future games.

Back to the original point though, iskim86, I hope that you don't let the rudeness of others make you bitter and petty like they are. Not everyone is a jerk, and maybe you just need to find a way to be aligned with more mature players. There are even clans based on that very premise

I have my own ways of dealing with them in the games i play I must say though im surprised some people had problems with WoW, i played it for a month and a half and things seemed a lot calmer than in the likes of starcraft/diablo II/most online games. The people all seemed tame.

Find a well-admin'd server. It really enriches the experience once you get to know the regulars, especially in a game like CS.

And then you finish school, get a job, start commuting to work, etc etc, and discover that people suck in the real world as well.
Resulting in you just generally hating people.

Well, at least that happened to me

What I hate the most are people who accuse you of cheating when you were not even at all! Let us say you are really good and they kick you out because they say your are cheating when your not! That kind of stuff pisses me off and shows how ****** stupid an admin can be! That is the primary reason I only like Single Player and Coop Games. On the other hand gaming online with X-Box 360 is decent because you can not see typed chat and if you get tired of hearing that person you block them and mute them... PROBLEM SOLVED!

I've only played one MMORGP (RoseOnline) but I've been on it since Feb 2005. Its a Korean game that has had services marketed also in the Philipines, Europe, North America and Japan. Only the Japanese, Philipine and North American services remain now but it was like nothing I'd ever seen (no typical fantasy style game) and alot of adults and women play it too. There are some free private servers also but I avoid them since they are run by hackers who stole the software and I don't want to risk getting a key logger that they may imbed in the client you download.

Never the less, there are the typical gaggle of teens who trash talk and are jerks. I've gotten sucked into annoying words of war and regretted it. Later I learned to not give jerks what they want, which is attention. Now I ignore them as much as possible and I enjoy the game alot more. If someone is being an a-hole, I move somewhere else and do myself a big favor.

I actually had a normal discussion about the rogue class once in Barrens chat... no one will believe me though .

Choose a better server. I play on clan KOF's server (Killer Old Farts).

Let's just say it has a mature player base and is well moderated.
