Do you take your shoes off before you start driving?

No. I drive with shoes. UNLESS I ran out of the apt wearing flipflops then I rip those things from hell off and drive barefoot. My feet in flip flops move to much.

I generally always wear shoes. I hate sandals or anything of the like

+1 on that exactly. I haven't worn sandals/flip flops since I bought my car

I can't as safely drive barefoot. I just don't like stomping on anything with my arch. I can go hiking through the woods and through rock fields in my bare feet, but a brake pedal or clutch just hits a sensitive pocket.

+1 to no sandals, though. Bare feet are better than those.

Most comfortable automatic I have driven barefoot: 2000 Honda Accord V6.
Most comfortable manual: tie between '87 Corolla, and '94 Integra GSR.

I wear size 13 shoes, and I think having bigger feet helps make it very comfortable. I currently drive a Jeep with some rugged floor mats, so not really much barefoot driving at the moment.

I didn't mind barefoot, but boots did suck. It was more about muscle memory at that point.

Normal sneakers can be just as hazardous as flip-flops though, I had a shoelace wrap around my brake pedal once and I couldn't get my foot over to the clutch - good times - luckily I was able to pop it into neutral, if it had been a high-load situation I might have kissed a tree.

??

You brake and accelerate with the right foot and clutch with the left. Why would your right shoelace being wrapped around the brake cause you clutch issues with your left foot?

my kids tell me i cant rock the sandals. i dont really like flipflops, but i grew up driving barefoot. my first official car was a datsun 210HB 5sp that i never wore shoes while driving. pretty much every cop that i ran into told me to put shoes on, it was illegal to drive without them. i thought that was BS, and still drove barefoot until i was like 22. now i have to wear hard soled boots for work, so thats what i drive in. its not too bad, easily gotten used to. i still drive barefoot once in a while, but for the most part its with either skate shoes or slip on vans when im not at work.

i had some serious callouses tho, i used to be barefoot all summer in AZ. try wandering an art fair in downtown tempe in june, it will melt lots of cheap shoes.

A co-worker where I used to work got her sandal stuck on the gas pedal and put a sizeable dent in the side of our brick building with her SUV (it had to hop over the parking block to do this). It caused a section of drywall to separate from the wall and knocked someone's monitor off their desk. I was inside at the time, and it was REALLY loud.

Ever since then, I've taken off my sandals to drive.

I like the feeling of driving barefoot, but I always have a problem pressing the gas pedal. Where I rest my foot, it isn't long enough and I have to use my toes to press on it. Gets uncomfortable after a while(no cruise control).

Barefoot is awesome. My fire resistant driving shoes feel almost like barefoot too.

Work/hiking boots are nothing, try using ski boots :awe:

one time while wearing my 20" engineer boots and driving a smaller car, my heel got stuck past the hard plastic floor mat, and the toe was tucked under the dash panel. i was trying to get my foot off the gas and on the brake, and i couldnt move my foot. i jammed into neutral and left foot braked to get that sucker stopped, barely missing another car at a stop sign. first thing i did was toss that damn floor mat out, then told my friend it was a hazard hehe. cant remember what kind of car it was, but the bottom dash piece was waaaay too low for anyone with a shoe size higher than 9. or the pedals were tucked too far under, one of the two.

Haha I'm surprised by everyone's comments..admittedly I had to "adjust" my shifting when I was wearing different things on my feet (sneakers, dress shoes, flip flops/sandals) but I think I got used to it within a few weeks (maybe months).

Driving without any shoes is pretty fun; sure shifts are jerky for a few seconds while you get used to it, but I feel like the car's more sensitive (in a good way) than otherwise.

Inversely, I probably hate dress shoes the most, they dull down the feedback for me.

It was my left foot and was definitely a one in a billion thing. I was not left foot braking or pulling any shenanigans, my shoelace worked its way loose and snagged burr or something on the pedal as I was letting the clutch out going from 4th to 2nd.

I would love to diagram it but I have no idea how it happened.
