I've gone electric

And I dig it!

My Fiesta ST lease is ending soon and I needed something to replace it for commuting. Unfortunately traffic has gotten really bad here and as cool as the Fiesta ST was, I might as well have had 40 HP considering how much bumper to bumper traffic and cruising @ 25-40 MPH I've done the past couple of years.

So about a month ago, I looked for used electric cars. I figured this way I'd have one-pedal driving most of the time (regen slows fast enough that you rarely hit the brakes), it would be quieter / smoother / reliable and I could use the carpool lane (which saves tons of time and $2.50 per day in bridge tolls here), and I wouldn't have to go to a gas station every week (which on a busy trafficked road during rush hour, blows). My commute is 42 miles round trip every day.

I tried the i3, Fiat 500e, Smart car Electric, Rav4 EV, and maybe a couple others... I didn't try the Leaf because I have always disliked it.

The winner:

If you told me five years ago I'd buy a Smart car, I'd never have believed it. But here's what I liked about this car...
1) Super cheap. I paid $7700 for this one with 6k miles on it. It's brand new basically.
2) It's tiny, which I love. It's almost 30" shorter than the Fiat yet it feels big inside. It was the only car in existence I'm aware of that is electric and can fit in my driveway (120" long from door to curb so I can charge it outside). The turning radius is also amazing. I've already passed people in places where a normal car never would be able to, and around here the city driving is stressful with any car. Smaller is better for city every time IMO.
3) It's fun. I like how tossable it is, plus it can zip in and out of pockets in traffic with less stress than any of the other cars I tried. It's quick 0-40 and fast enough after that for me. It's ideal for these conditions.
4) Build quality. Made by Mercedes, it's got a lot of features. Auto wipers, lights, heated leather seats... most of the other cars have this, but I found the build quality to be much better than the Toyota or Fiat. The i3 seems to have too much trouble and was a lot more expensive.

Maybe in a few years I'll get a Model 3, but I needed something today and for this price I figured how could I go wrong. I still have my VW Westfalia camper w/ manual trans, my girlfriend's Honda fit, and I drive Porsches every day at my job so I get plenty of thrills from those. It's only been about 3 weeks of commuting so far but so far I'm loving it.

edit - Added a couple more pics.

Good stuff you went EV.

Mercedes quality and build is not really anything to write home about in the US.

It sucks.

Powertrain, motor and such is made by Tesla, which is a good thing.

Enjoy.

Well it seems pretty good to me edit - At least for me it's nice, compared to most of the cars I've owned or driven. I'm talking more about the materials than long term reliability. That will be something I'll have to see over time...

68 miles range.

does your work have recharging?

That's the rated range, but I'm guessing that's at 75 MPH or something. City seems closer to 90 and mixed driving has been closer to 75-80 for me. Maybe I'd hit 68 if I ran the AC hard.

I could recharge it at work, but my commute's only 40-44 miles round trip depending on which route I take or if I stop at a store etc., so I just charge at home when I return each night. Usually I have 45-50% left each night when I get home.

Hard to argue with the price/mileage/years.

I threw out the idea of getting a used Leaf for my wife since her commute is short and used ones can easily be had for $10k. She was unamused.

Not sure- It has a 4 year / 50k mile warranty, so that'll be over in 14 months. I'm betting on the battery not dying for 100k+ and dealing with it if it happens during the time I own it. I usually keep cars around 2-years so I'll probably move onto something else before that. I guess the worst it could be is about the price of the car? Maybe they'll be $3000? I don't know. Maybe someone will have a way to fix the bad cells when/if it happens. There's also an option to buy a battery warranty for under $1000/year, but I'm going to risk it for now.

There's quite a few of these out with 50k+ miles and no sign of battery degradation at this time.

I just spent $50 refilling an SUV's gas tank.

Yeah, next car I get will likely be electric. Probably a Chevy Bolt, though I'll consider a Tesla Model 3 as well.

Most battery doesn't just die instantly. They slowly lose their storage capacity, for you that means the range get shorter and shorter.
Oh yeah I'm pretty aware of how it works too. Between the three of us at my company we've had a lot of EVs: 4 lead acid (all terrible), one EV and three hybrid nimh (early RAV4 and early Honda insights), and now three of these smarts, a spark EV, and a new rav EV. I think the degradation won't cause problems with my commute for several years. I was more worried about some type of outright failure but I'm still betting against it. The nice thing is I'll save so much on gas, lease payments and bridge tolls that after a short time I could easily buy a battery or a second smart down the road if there are issues. 300/mo lease, 100+ gas, 50 insurance (maybe more/less), 55 bridge tolls each month.

It's a small business so I do a little bit of everything. I install parts and replacements like brakes / big brake kits, exhausts, wheels. Some suspension but I don't do the engine builds. Our tech is way better than I'll ever be so I just humbly help where I can

I also do many test drives, but most the day I'm on phones, email and shipping. I also do the IT and graphic design, shirts, decals, and manage the fabrication and development of our parts.

Hahaha that's what caught my eye as well. If its European based I hope you got the extended warranty for that "quality".

I agree the Chevy Volt seems like the best overall deal but I highly doubt you are getting a Volt for $7700. At the same time there is a reason this car only cost $7700.

I didn't want a Volt. It's way too big for me. I also wanted an electric car not some uber complex hybrid thing.

There are three good reasons why this car is only $7700:
1) There are a ton of other used electric cars on the market now as the leases are ending, and people are buying NEW electric cars for so cheap due to lease incentives, CAFE Standards and govt. subsidies. This is especially true in California. There have been many deals under $100/month for a new Fiat or Spark. My neighbor just got an eGolf for $149/month with nothing down.
2) People are afraid of used electric cars. It's kind of unknown territory at this point. ^ this is probably what you're referring to. I'm talking about build quality, not reliability though. IE, materials like the plastics, rubber, cloth and features.
3) It's a niche car that is definitely not as appealing to families and many others as a Leaf, Fiat 500e, Chevy Spark and so-on.

Great price and mileage. I was going back and forth between this, 500e and the SparkEV, but settled on the spark for its range, usable rear seats and trunk. I don't mind the look of the smart at all but the gf seem to detest it greatly lol.

Nice! The Spark is a good little car. When driven carefully I got over 100 miles on it, and it's pretty fast. My friend's 3-year lease on is ending next month and he bought a Smart to replace it.

My girlfriend loves the Smart. She thought the Spark was cool too, but the one all girls love is the Fiat.

Oh yea no doubt, the 500e would be the top of the list if it weren't for so many issues with the electric motor...and the price.

Hey that is better than the 918 Spyder's electric range of 12 miles, although that car might have a bit more "pep".

Congrats on your purchase OP, that is a very good price. One pedal driving is where it's at. The first time I drove my friend's P85D, I was amazed at the regen capabilities compared to my sister's Prius. If you own the car long enough to replace the battery pack, it will probably still come out ahead of a properly maintained ICE car with the myriad of maintenance items an internal combustion engine needs which an electric motor does not. Things like oil changes, coolant flushes, valve timing/clearance adjustment, spark plugs, and other things start to add up.

I test drove it and a friend got one, but I'm not a fan. It looks great - don't get me wrong, but I hate the seats, the interior (door handles and switches are very poorly made for example), and it's got a weird ergonomic feel to it. It does have decent range and charging capabilities though. I think the Spark is a better car.
