I vote for Anandtech.com. I don't think the people visiting other sites give a rat?s ass about TA RC5 team. People who really visit Anandtech might be interested (if we have something like "Give something back to the community" or something to make them feel guilty like those charity ads), cause it's their favorite or one of the favorite hardware sites. Lets try to recruit our own before we wonder off to unfamiliar territories.

Just my 0.02 cents.

It would make sense to put it on the register simply because the surfers for that webpage usually:

- Have more processing power at their disposal than a normal computer user
- Would be interested in such a program that uses unused CPU cycles and takes advantage of SMP

Other sites I'm sure would work well, but keep the above in consideration.. also, it doesn't take a whole lot of brain power to get the client set up, but it takes the willingness to learn on the part of the newbie. Ok, I'm starting to get OT.

Register has my vote.

I like the idea of putting it up on AnandTech first. Who knows, we might even get a little family discount? Then if there was any $$ left we could try another site.

The Register is a good idea I think. Lot's of people stop by to get the latest, and sometimes the info is even correct.

Well it seems the two most popular choices are Anandtech's main page - even though we already have a link and logo there gratis - or
+ www.theregister.co.uk
+ an actual web advertising company
(dont know if the following sites already have their own teams)
+ CNET
+ hardocp.com
+ www.sharkyextreme.com

Personally, I think its tight deciding between Anandtech main page, or theregister (my suggestion and preferred choice ).

There is also another option.

A while ago I saw the mechanism of banner exchange, but threw it aside as ausable for our purposes. We didn't have a good website back then.

Since then the situation has changed dramatically in our favour.

We have multiple websites, made by team members.

If one of us (I'm happy to do that, all for the benefit of TA), made an account with a banner exchange company, then WE would be generating a lot of cpm's for their banners.

There are two ways these companies work:
  1. The number of hits. Not working for us, since we usually generate our own trafic.
  1. The number of views. Working for us, since every active TA-member is looking at the stats multiple times a day.

There are programs that give one point per unique view. For every two points you get 1 banner showed on some page.

This would have two advantages:
It is free.
The banner would show up on all websites, that have an account with the BX company.

We only need volunteer webmasters, that want to put the banner on their pages!

Peter.

How about 2CPU.com, lots of guys there using SMP systems. And I don't think the have their own team?

Opps damn they do it's right there on the front page, though they only have 40 members, mahahahaha!

Thats not a bad idea PeterN, should try and talk to Virge or someone who has a hand in the TA web-site.

i somehow think someone'd have to come up with a hella optimised p4 core before the register'd let us post an rc5 ad on their site but a good idea nonetheless, i know heaps of people who fit the description and visit the site

Lots of good suggestions in here! I'd like to propose a new wrinkle to this recruiting scheme.
==We might try offering a "sign-on bonus" of some number of RC5 blocks, SETI WU or GF or whatever the new member decides to work on. I would gladly donate 1000 RC5 blocks per week to the cause.==

IMHO,we need to make a decision about where the banner is going soon. The longer we wait, the harder it will be to stay ahead of the DPC.

My next assimilation is way overdue. I hope to build a T-bird before the end of the year, ...we'll see.

I submitted the banners that we voted on, but I have re-worked #4 and I think its an improvment, but don't know if its worth voting all over again.

Cycas, you can certainly use one of mine if you want, help yourself! They are here, I like the smaller one better myself. Neither of them are very cool-looking, it was my first try at animated GIF ads.

Personally I don't care which banner we use as long it gets the job done.
I don't remember reading about what the banner will be linked to. Has that decision been made? If so, someone please post a link either to that thread or the page for banner linkage here.

Thanks,
Geoff
