Simply removing a UPC code shouldn't disallow you from returning something. I'm fully aware of the abuse potential, and that most retail places have similar policies.
Having said that, you paid for a new product and that product died within the typical return timeframe - now they expect you to send it in for warranty service instead of returning it simply because you removed the UPC for a rebate. How long is that going to take? Most electronics that I've personally sent in for warranty have taken MUCH longer than your typical return/get replacement shipped, etc...
So... you do have another option - file a chargeback. I've been successful in this exact same situation. You shouldn't have to wait longer for warranty service simply because you removed a UPC.
