We had a guy walk in our shop. He says he wants the "best of the best" and has $11,000 earmarked just for this setup.

Personally I think the guy is full of shit, but I'll humor him and give him a quote.

So, list out what you'd do with that budget.

Of course, you should tell the guy that you're just so talented that you can build him an ultimate bleeding-edge system that will perform as fast as any desktop on the planet for less than half that amount. Or, you could spend all his money on the following grotesque waste of dough (it actually wasn't as hard to blow that amount of money as I thought it would be!):

ASUS P5N64 WS PRO WiFi LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 790i Ultra SLI ATX Intel Motherboard

Obviously, there's plenty of room to play around with that list. If you want to add water cooling for example, you could choose a cheaper monitor, or get rid of one of the velociraptors or the solid state drive.

Oh, I didn't list a mouse/keyboard or CPU cooler - pocket change for the one of your choice.

fail

I didn't say they're nice speakers - remember, I'm trying to blow 11k here. . .

Then get real speakers

That would make it too easy - you HT guys can blow 11k on just the cable to connect your front speakers to your tube amp

I'm more of a Home Depot 14 gauge copper wire guy myself.

I'm a generic speaker wire guy too.

With 11k I'd be spending ~$3k - $4k on sound, ~$4k on displays, and then the remainder on a less ridiculously bleeding edge but still utterly awesome $3k-$4k computer

I didn't see the guide lines there....this is my first time venturing into this forum.

As for what we do, we're mainly service and repair. We do carry two different base model custom build systems for anyone interested. Any "specialized builds" are usually for servers and such.

Initially I told him to build something for $5000 and pocket the rest to build another system in 6 months when the first one was out dated!

I also was going to refer him somewhere else as we don't do custom builds to "make money". There's little to no profit in it. I'm just curious to maybe build it and play with it for a few days to "benchmark test it" before turning it over.

As for my guidelines, I guess I have none. This is more of an open ended question as to what YOU would do if you built this for yourself.

I guess one thing I'd def like in there is quad video cards. Maybe a bank of 8 high end monitors and a projector on the side for party gaming. Also, are quad quad cores doable in a gaming system (I really haven't kept up on it, I was under the impression thats server level only stuff)?

No limit, only your imagination

Thanks for your reply modoheo.....although I will agree with YoYo on the bose...LOL

Since a good gaming system can be achieved with $2000, $11.000 is not enough.

A 50 minute session with a good shrink in NYC is about $250.

The residual $9000 would buy only 36 sessions. A case like this needs more.

Make A HUGE RAID config with 8 SSD drives, if you figure 600 a drive(times 8), and a 1500 dollar RAID controller thats a good 4800+1500= 6300 dollars and another 6 thousand to make the rest of this "rig". I had the same situation kinda, you can read my blog.

http://webbterfuge.blogspot.co...er-computer-build.html

I got generation leapfrogged kinda and a few things have been changed on the list of stuff but me and a couple other people are building the system for a client who had the same crazy bugdet pocket burning syndrome. lol anyways cool beans

If the guy is serious about spending that kind of jack on a PC...

1. He's not looking to buy a pile of components that totals $11k.
2. He's buying a strong, stable system.
3. Your time and expertise are worth plenty to him.
4. Don't simply toss $11k worth of parts in a Newegg cart and think that #2 is finished.

Any idiot can fill up a shopping cart with $11k worth of crap.
The key is to build the best performing and stable system for a final sale price of $11k (or less, if goal is achieved).

Not really. If they guy thinks he has to spend 11k to have a "strong, stable" system, then he is very uninformed.

If you really want to do the guy a favor, sit him down and ask exactly what he wants to do with the computer. Then tell him his best bet is to build a high-end system for about 3k today, and come back every 12-18 months and do the same thing. That way for the same amount of money he'll have an up-to-date high-performance system for about 4-6 years, which will give him top performance for much longer than any system you build for 11k today.

Something like an overclocked C2D Quad with an X48 mobo and Crossfired 4870's can easily be had for less than 3k, and will compete with any system available at any price.
