I'm sorry to say that isn't me lol. I generally avoid "soul food" restaurants (I don't even like the term) because they usually suck, not to mention paying for food that you can make at home better. I don't order gumbo from restaurants either because most of them use a roux mix.

Frankly I've never had an issue with using a store bought roux. Its not like roux is anything complicated yet its a PIA to make.

I never had okra until I lived for a while in the greater New Orleans area (Mandeville). It's very good fried. I miss the food there.

Any vegetable that has to be deep-fried and served with ranch to make it appealing is not worth eating. It's just a barely edible spoon for fat people to use as they eat a condiment and call it a meal.

To me it's like a gravy mix or microwave grits. Not a fan at all. Something as wonderful and special as gumbo (not to mention expensive if it's seafood) should be a labor of love, not a quick fix. You lose all that delicious fat when you use a mix.

now that's just silly. how 'bout I just get a delicious vegetable that doesn't need to be de-slimed in the first place?
It's not a requirement, but some people don't like the slime. It's delicious either way. Do you complain about peeling an onion? It takes only a couple of minutes to de-slime okra.

I'm sorry, what? Who the hell eats okra like that? If I blend up filet mignon and mix it with a peanut butter smoothie, that's my fault, not filet's.

Did you miss the dozen or so posts saying that okra was good fried? Fried okra is typically served with ranch, and that's just a con that fat people came up with because drinking a bowl of ranch is considered "unacceptable." "OK, I'll take this mildly healthy vegetable, cover it in batter, deep-fry the hell out of it until it's virtually unrecognizable as organic matter, and coat it in salty, creamy fat. IT'S HEALTHY." Since the alternative is eating okra, I guess they have a point.

Ban. Southern food is awesome.

Not much of a connoisseur of Southern food if you have never had okra.

Did you miss the dozen or so posts naming various other dishes where the okra is not fried? We get it, you don't like okra, but you don't need to make blanket statements about a vegetable you don't even care for. Also, I have never seen anyone eat fried okra with ranch, and the cuts are so small you can't use them as a spoon. Nice use of weasel words too.

Born and raised. Okra sucks.

Yeah, but I wasn't quoting your post. I was quoting OP who wanted to ban someone for saying southern food sucks, when he hasn't even tried okra.

That said, I had never tried okra until I lived in North Carolina. Lived on a farm in Georgia after that, and wow those Georgia Jet sweet potatoes are to die for, unless you add any sugar or marshmallows, then blech...

Lighten up, Francis. Sweet potatoes suck too. Must have gotten my mother's Illinois genes.

If you want to talk about Southern eats...fried chicken/steak, mac+cheese, rice+gravy, deviled eggs, 3 day cooked green beans, peas, scratch biscuits, sweet corn, potato salad, homemade ice cream, banana custard, scratch pound cake, etc...

:wub::wub:

My Grand was born ~1910. Her mother died when she was 11 and she had to take over the kitchen. So she had 50+ years experience when I was born. She was just amazing.

what is wrong with you
You can't make alcohol out of them.

kidding.

I can tolerate them as sweet potato fries but that's it. I don't like mustard greens, cooked spinach, cooked cabbage, collards, cauliflower....

Just give me corn and a multi, thanks.

The only reason I may even know okra exists is because of World of Warcraft. Damn harvesters dropped them...
