That's disastrous compared to a good SB.

IMO you'll find out that voltage required for under 4.5 Ghz stability is less than SB (think 1.1V vs. 1.2V+ that most SB require), and that power consumption is accordingly much lower. That's the strength of IB, moderately high clocks with a significant reduction in power.

It's not all about maximum frequency. A 4.4 Ghz IB running at 1.1V will outpace a 4.5Ghz SB running at 1.25V while using 30-40% less power (augmented from 20% stock vs. stock power savings).

LagunaX, try a more reasonable overclock under 4.5 Ghz, and find the lowest stable voltage. I think that will make IB look much more interesting.

However, the sweet spot seems a decent 4.6ghz at 1.3v, load temps low 80's.

So far, not bad but a little disappointed.

Not a bad chip at all but doesn't clock as high as my 4.8ghz 2500k and 2600k AND runs at higher temps.

Woof, woof. Looks like IB is a dog for overclockers. There are a few threads on xtremesystems with similar terrible temps and poor clocking.

Might be a good time to pick up a few SB chips and toss them in the closet.

Given the (supposed) fact that IB can o/c very well with high performance cooling, and the fact that I've been holding out for IB for a few months, if this is how it's going to be then I may need to invest in some high quality water cooling to make this long wait justified. I wonder if lapping the cpu/hsf and using indigo xtreme would be good enough though. I kinda have to assume that your 4.7ghz was limited by temperature and not voltage but I duno

The irony was that I was laughing when prior to the release of bulldozer the pics of the AMD water cooling solution was leaked leading many to believe it would be required and thus it would be even more expensive to over clock. Now the shoe is on the other foot.

Nah would crash or fail Prime at 4.7ghz quickly - not a temp thing though eventually it would be if the chip didn't have that ceiling.

3770k's should clock better but on air might be eggs and bacon...

REQUESTS B4 I YANK THE CHIP FOR EBAY AND REPLACE IT WITH A 4.8GHZ SANDY:
A 4ghz run at stock or close?
Cinebench?
SuperPi?

Gonna see if I can do higher DDR3 2400 before I replace it back with one of my 4.8ghz SB chips.

Any reasonable SHORT test I'll consider.

He said he wants to sell the chip so I doubt he wants to try anything that will make it fail.

1.4v isn't going to kill it, I'm referring to failing prime not failing as in killing the chip.

That's disastrous compared to a good SB.

You aren't kidding! That is essentially the same voltage and speed of my SB-E, and I have 2 more cores with high 60's as max temp! Not a great OC option so far...

Of course, I would like to see relative performance as well. If IB easily hits 4.5ghz with a decent voltage, and performs similarly as an equivalent 4.8+ SB, it might still be worth it. Same performance, less power usage. Still disappointing though...

Noticed in the screenshot that the memory is only at 1066mhz as well. That is barely taxing the memory controller; you could expect more instability and/or heat with 1333+ and lots of RAM channels populated.

Someone set their 2500k to 4.6ghz and run Cinebench (CPU and Single) to compare.

I'll tally up the short requests later and run a couple.

It's dual channel mode so it's DDR3 2133

It's hard to believe one 3570k would run at 85 C and another would max out at high 50's...................... If you know what I'm sayin

4.0ghz stock volts, nice load temps 50's:

4.2ghz stock volts, nice load temps 50's:

4.5ghz 1.24v, ok load temps low 70's:
