Ivy Bridge and 23.967Hz

In Anand's article it was mentioned of a BIOS update to fix the 23.967Hz issue on Intel HD4000 Integrated Graphics.

As I am wanting to build a mini-ITX HTPC I'm interested to know if this BIOS has been released and if someone could test how it applies at the moment? I imagine there are a few interested parties in this!!

I don't think that it is that big of an issue to begin with. The problem still persists with IB but it is reduced since SB and you'll hardly notice unless you're more keen on looking out for jerkiness instead of watching the video. If all else fails, you could realize the jerkiness and it is driving you insane, get a cheap, low end half height discrete GPU.

Registering four years ago and first post today?

Sadly, I don't know about this, don't have the hardware to test it and am also in the "don't really care" boat as well.

I am curious if it is resolved though, simply from the standpoint of whether or not Intel is interested in addressing product issues that have such a small focus. There might be other problems in the future that effect me and I would use this as a way to gauge Intel's responsiveness on their newer graphics products.

I uopdated my DH77DF BIOS recently. It was the first release after the shipping one. Not mentioned there. But lets see when 3 and 4 hits. It is a very minor issue. Personally we dont notice it at all in this household on the HTPC (i5-661).

An ivy bridge 3507k is a bit overkill for a HTPC! I would prefer to keep the one PCI-E slot free for a DVB-T2 or DVB-S2 tuner.

The whole thing will go into a mini-ITX enclosure which goes with my home cinema system.

If AMD Trinity was available I would consider that, but it's not. There are other options but if Intel would fix a bug in their CPU and they would release a 22nm i3 then it would be two thumbs up from me.

It's just a shame we have had no update from Intel or Anandtech. I wouldn't to spend a lot of money on a Intel HTPC only watch my blu-rays juddering!!

I have a 3570K with HD4000 on an Asus P8Z77-V. The intel video driver is from about 2 months ago, and I'm running the shipping BIOS version from ASUS, also about 2 months old. I'm moderately sensitive to video issues, but not anal-retentive. I can't say I've noticed any judder from the 23.blahblahblah issue when playing movies in WMC (for some reason XBMC isn't playing nice right now, not related to refresh issues). It's close enough that you miss a frame once every eight minutes or something like that, and I haven't ever been cognizant of when it's happened. My two bits.

24hz is NOT useful unless you have a projector that can do 48hz or 96hz. I have a 8350, 24hz shows some flickering even at 48hz.

On a 60 hz display, you get video pull down regardless. Even the plasmas with true 24hz have issues with flickering because most PCs when set to 24hz output a very weak signal.

In conclusion 24hz is [lousy] marketing.

Boris, I'm not going to keep telling you this. No profanity in the technical forums.

I suppose you could just buy an AMD CPU although that is kind of like going to the shoe shop and cutting your legs off because they don't have your size.

If outputting to a TV it's pretty much a moot point. With so many TV's supporting interpolation you'll never notice.
I've output 1080P from my Ivy Bridge laptop to my 50" Plasma and I can't detect the frame drop because the TV is constantly doing the frame interpolation, thus when the "missed" frame rears it's ugly head, the TV adjusts for it.

Frankly, it's nothing to worry about unless you are outputting to an old TV.

I'm running my secondary monitor off the IGP and when I watch my slingbox on it I have seen some very noticable flickering. Funny thing is that after a few minutes its either completely gone or very infrequent.

because the TV is constantly doing the frame interpolation.

Not if you turn it off it doesn't. My Panasonic has various picture processing features which I turn off for movies as it introduces artificial movement.

From a pure av enthusiast I want pure 23.967Hz. Yes it is a niche but there is a market for it otherwise it would never be mentioned, e.g. google ivy bridge htpc - anandtech article!!

Most people assume 24Hz is bad because of the judder they would get on a desktop (which is why people set it 60Hz), but when movie playback starts it should be 23.967Hz.

23.976 doesn't work easily/well on even discrete video cards in my experience. Nvidia graphics generally require a custom resolution to get close to a perfect 23.976 and AMD, while very close (e.g. 23.97589 or something like that), is still not perfect, which results in the occasional frame double/drop. I find these very jarring. However, Reclock can fix framerate display issues.

Isn't Llano good enough for an HTPC? Otherwise you can get a discrete card that supports that resolution if you can fit it space wise (cost is rather minor for those cards, so space would be the limiting factor.)

I just don't get why they can't get this right (even on some expensive GFX cards). Even $40 Blu-ray players handle 23.976 Hz output correctly...
