I think it all depends on what you're going to use it for. Like in your case, sure there's no real reason to upgrade. But, for someone like me who doesn't even have a desktop anymore and is running from a 3 year old gaming laptop, there's a lot of allure. To each their own

Thanks for the perspective. I'm sure in 1-2 more cycles I'll be ready. I'll probably upgrade at the next tock. My motherboard is pretty long in the tooth. Sata, no usb3, no fancy bios, no ssd caching, etc.

I still don't see the alure. For gaming, I'm not plunking down 200$+ for 5 more fps in Starcraft 2. I'm sticking with my i5-750@4.2, which last time bench'd can outrun a stock 2500k. Good enough for me. Are people really upgrading for gaming alone?

Some people think like you and then there's people like me who just want the latest and greatest. You young guys have it easy these days. There were times when you had to pay 400 dollars for 100 more mhz. I still remember when the fx60 was 999.99 on newegg

Ditto. I'm not upgrading for another 2 years minimum.

Same here. I think after this, I might upgrade my GPUs and RAM, but other than that...I'm sticking with this for a good while. I didn't buy all this 1155 stuff just to replace it in a year. I'm perfectly content not having the latest and greatest because I just can't afford it lol

At the same time.....the price you'd get for your current gear is doing nothing but dropping.
Yeah and thankfully those days are *long* gone. I'm glad we've plateaued. I can remember no other time where my gear has lasted as long!
Also thankful for the GPU centric age now. Only one thing to really worry about upgrading these days.

After seeing the reviews, my i7-2600 feels more than adequate. I'll wait for the Tock.

I'm going to be sanding down the IHS on my IB to a thin mirrored surface, as well as the D-14 (actually already done that on the D-14), heat my chill factor 3 up and apply a very small amount, and hopefully that will make a bigger impact on temperatures than going water and not lapping. I think logically that will be the case.

4.25 on a Q9550? Thats a VERY nice OC, what settings are you suing?

1.392 V with minor voltage bumps across the motherboard but nothing too advanced. This chip has been solid at 4.25 for over 3 years and I think its got to be one of the best q9550's out there. I got damn lucky. Someone here wanted to buy it off me when I got it but I didn't want to sell it. I probably should have though in retrospect, for some exorbitant price. I am not an advanced overclocker by any means either - he was asking about gttls which I don't know what they are. I build my brother a system with a q9550 shortly thereafter and only got 3.8 ghz with similar voltage.

Ivy Bridge is turning out to be a big disappointment to me. The early predictions on speed increases from Sandy Bridge were estimated at 15-20% but it turns out it's only about 5%.

I was going to do a Sandy Bridge build last summer but held off for Ivy Bridge. What a waste of time, arghhh! Good thing I got in on the Microcenter 2600K deal last week

Looks like 15-20% is strictly about mobile. Desktop is indeed not up to our expectations.

In the process of upgrading two old P4 (socket 478) AGP machines. Already updated one to a z68/GEN3, SSD and 2500K. The other P4 now has spare components to allow for a couple more years of life with Slackware.

No thanks. I can definitely wait until hopefully! a ten core Haswell-E or beyond (depending on how Haswell turns out) for the remaining P4. I'm going to stagger my sockets/chipsets this time around.

I guess I like really significant upgrades.
