Ivy Bridge launch set for April 23

Intel expected to bring forward the launch of Ivy Bridge

Intel, which originally planned to announce its new Ivy Bridge processors on April 29, is expected to bring forward the announcement to April 23 with Asustek computer, Acer, Lenovo and Hewlett-Packard (HP) all ready to release their second-generation ultrabooks starting in May, according to sources from notebook players.

Kirk Skaugen, vice president and general manager of Intel's PC Client Group, at Intel developer Forum (IDF) in Beijing pointed out that ultrabook prices in the next few months will drop rapidly to US$699 from US$999 currently as shipment scales become large reducing costs.

Intel, at the show, also demonstrated its developments with China-based partners for products such as chassis, panels and software, and in addition to showcasing upcoming second-generation ultrabooks, Intel also revealed its innovative designs for ultrabooks and several concept devices for Windows 8.

To promote ultrabooks, Intel has set up a fund of US$300 million to assist its partners for ultrabook design and R&D. The company is also integrating the upstream supply ecosystem to allow its partners to connect with each other.

Me too, but I'll have to wait a few weeks for Microcenter to start loss leading IVB... I'm cheap like that.

Going to Hawaii beginning of May, I can wait until after that.

Lately, I have not been a fan of Intel's Ticks. Westmere was good only if you paid for a 6 core monster or wanted a dual core with IGP. IB seems to have some process issues (granted 22nm with tri gate is a big step). I really hope that 16nm Broadwell goes a little smoother.

I have two sticks of 2GB RAM and my refurb P67 mobo, waiting for IVB i3 so I can build another HTPC. Tempting to get the 3770K instead, and use my current 2500K for HTPC, but that would be an overkill... for the HTPC.

Been meaning to purchase a Z68 motherboard to compliment my 2500k,but with Ivy bridge so close,i might purchase a I7 3770k myself with a z77,and give the gf the 2500k and h67 motherboard and slap my old 8800 gts in there and put some older games on it for her and the kids.

Is it confirmed z77 will support pci 3.0 on the platform or does it depend on the model of the motherboard?

Based on the information we have, what do you mean by 'process issues'? I agree that OC ability may not be as good, but that doesn't mean process issues. If they hit their freq targets and power envelopes, that is what they wanted. I don't think we have enough information yet.

All Z77 mobos should support PCI 3.0, even some Z68 will support PCI 3.0 with a BIOS update, but check the specs of your board to see what exactly and how many lanes are supported.

I think Ivy Bridge changed things too much. I guess they couldn't have avoided rearchitecting the GPU, but that may have been the reason for problems. On Clarkdale, while GPU was substantially enhanced, it was on an MCM with different process technology. The CPU itself was essentially a shrink of Nehalem cores.

I was really hoping to hear news about ivybridge coming to laptops soon. Summer classes start in the middle of May and I will need one, so I guess i'll be figuring out a way to start classes without a laptop lol.

All Z77 mobos should support PCI 3.0, even some Z68 will support PCI 3.0 with a BIOS update, but check the specs of your board to see what exactly and how many lanes are supported.

I am gonna guess Z77 is gonna be a cheaper alternative to Z68 like,and unless i missed something,the two chipsets look nearly identical,but the Z68 usually sports pci 3.0 on their higher end motherboards or comes in a bios update,while it should be factory for Z77 of any price segment

Why pay more for a Z68 that is compatible if Z77 has it,and any motherboard to be over $175 is pretty much premium,i think perhaps i am rusty on pricing but i remember a good quality asus Z68 that sported 3.0 costing over $200..for the pro gen3.

I will get an IB when they launch...unless my MC right down the road from the office has an amazing sale on either 2500ks or 2600ks.

Doesn't seem like I gain anything by going IB over SB, but if they were the same price I would obviously get the IB.

Not sure what you all are aiming for with this new chip but if it's overclocking you definitely want Sandy Bridge not Ivy.

I am not an extreme overclocker. I basically like to overclock just enough to get the extra performance without really breaking much past the stock vcore.

I have been running a Q6600 for ~3.5 years at ~1.4V and 3.2 GHz.

I haven't seen official IB benches yet. If it can get 5-10% better performance than SB and easily clock to 4.4 GHz then it is a fine purchase for what I want.

But no...I am not dead set on purchasing IB. I will get what seems to be the best deal.
