I would like someone's advice on a good retailer who sells barebones systems. I've checked Pricewatch and Resellerratings, but I'd like the AT opinion.

I want to get a barebones system for under $300.00. With what I want, if anyone has ideas, please let me know!

Athlon XP 2100 (seems to be a good chip for the price)
Reliable Motherboard that supports USB 2.0, has at least 4 or 5 PCI slots, an AGP slot, and accepts DDR memory. Built in sound is nice, but not necessary because I'll eventually buy a sound card anyway. Since I really don't know much about motherboards, any advice here would be great. By the way, when a motherboard has built in LAN, does that just mean that there's an ethernet port near all of the speaker ports? Does this affect performance in any way?
AGP 64MB Video Card with S-video out.
Decent case - doesn't have to be flashy, but room for a DVD-ROM, CD-RW, and a possible extra hard drive.
Cooling Fans
Modem - not necessary, but if available for 10-20 bucks, it'd be a nice addition. No Winmodems, though.
Ethernet card - if not already on the motherboard
1 year warranty

I don't plan to overclock this machine. In fact, the main reason I want it is to run MAME and The SIMS. All other programs are nice bonuses. I already have a 40GB Maxtor hard drive, a copy of RH Linux 8, Mandrake 9, and Windows 98SE, 1GB of DDR 2100 memory from Buy.com (crosses fingers), a DVD-ROM, a SCSI CD-R, keyboard, mouse, monitor, and speakers.

Am I dreaming, or can I get a system like this for under $300 from a reliable company? All help is much appreciated!

Thanks!

Hello,

I think I got this post in the right category.

Im a swesish guy going to Los Angeles In the beginning of March, Im gonna try to find a good laptop since the prices in USA is much better than in sweden. Its like 40% better prices.
Now for my question:

What store(s) can you recommend for me to visit In Los Angeles? Would be great if they had a website to or an E-Mail atleast.
Or where is the best place to buy A Laptop in LA? Only gonna be in LA for 3 days so Its a litte risky to order one online to the hotel, I would rather like to buy it in a store.

TexasChet -- L.A. is a great place to buy computer stuff. When you arrive, pick up the latest flyers from the major stores. Various ads appear throughout the wee, but all the stores usually have a flyier in the Sunday L.A. times, and the Fry's ad appears on the back of the sports section. You can buy the early edition on Saturday afternoon (crazy, but that is the way it works). Also, check back to this forum for the latest deals. You can do better buying full sized computers from local dealers or, better yet, local swap meets (see below). Since reliablitity and service are serious issues with a laptop, you're probably better off buying a major brand from one of the Major stores in L.A.:

Best Buy
CompUSA
Frys'
Office Depot
Office Max
Staples

All of these stores price match each other, so check carefully for your best deal. Check for swap meet info:

I'm looking for a hot deal on a Canon S30. I've found ways to get the camera from stores for about $390 shipped, but I'm looking to hit $350. Maybe Dell S/P will drop the price tomorrow, but, barring that, find me a deal please.

I am looking to set up 802.11b for my home system (2 laptops and desktop over ethernet) to share a DSL connection. I am looking at D-Link components, since they are supposedText to have 22Mbps throughput when used together (Di-614+ Broadband router and 2 PCMCIA cards). I have seen the router for around $75.00 after rebate and 2 cards for about $60/each at Amazon. Surprisingly, they seem to be the cheapest that I have found. Has anyone else seen these cheaper? Are there any other brands that are much better at that price point? Should I not worry about price and go with Orinoco? Thanks for any assistance.
