My GTXP crapped out, only outputting through the left channel, so I need something else. I was thinking of trying to save $60 bucks and not buy a new card but instead use the onboard cmedia sound. Is it any good? Would I notice a difference, both in quality and CPU utilization, compared to a $50-60 soundcard? If so, how much?

thanks

Well, I can't be too much help to you, but here's my thoughts. I have the KK266 as well, and it generally regarded as having very good onboard sound. The cmedia chip it uses is pretty good. It does have a higher CPU utilization than a separate card, but I don't think it will be that bad.

For more info, you could go over to AMDMB and search their messageboard. They have a forum dedicated to IWill mobos, and I'm sure they have a few topics regarding this.

depending on what you use it for, the onboard sound could be more than adequate. it can do 5.1 and supports EAX and A3D (i think). but if your ears are picky, you may notice it doesn't sound as full and rich as some higher end sound cards. but you'll only notice that with really nice speakers and if you're picky. if not, the onboard sound should be fine

btw....i like the equality part in your new "pledge" but "under God" deserves to be there too

Under god was added in 1954, I use his orginal 1892 version before it was mucked with by politicans.

i know it was added by eisenhower......but i think it deserves to be there....did they strip out the "equality" part too, or was that you adding it in?

anyways, the reason i said that is that i'm almost getting fed up with the courts getting rid of parts of our society because 1 person doesn't agree. if 99% of all people want "under God" in the pledge (note, this rant doesn't necessarily have to do with the pledge..i'm just using it as an example), why should the wishes of the 1% be heeded. in this case, who's to say exactly what the founding fathers meant when they said "separation of church and state?" i believe they didn't want the president of our country also being the leader of the church as it was in england at the time of the constitution (which goes back to Henry VIII when he denounced catholicism in his country so he could get a divorce to remarry...then he became the new head of the church of england). so, if that was the fathers' intentions, then "under God" should most certainly be admissible as well as school prayer and all other aspects of society that have been destroyed as a result of the courts' interpretation

sorry to go on a rant there....considering this is a hardware forum. good luck with the onboard sound. sorry to hear about your GTXP crapping out on you. i hope mine doesn't do the same...that would suck.

i have a KK266 and i use its onboard sound in addition to a GadgetLabs 4x4 DAW card. maybe the c-media suffers slightly compared to the GL card but i use it to monitor output and i think overall it sounds pretty good. you may as well try it for yourself and see if you can tell the difference between it and your old card - i'm guessing you'll be happy with it. and you can't beat the price.

I'm using the onboard c-media sound on my KK266 and it's pretty good, but I'm not using my computer as a stereo. I tried a Hercules Fortissimo II card and couldn't really tell a difference in sound quality. I know the Hercules isn't the world's best sound card, but for $50 it should be better than on-board sound and it wasn't. In any case, one thing to be aware of when using the onboard sound is sometimes certain features won't work. For example, the mic and line inputs won't work, which I later found out is a problem many have had with this mobo. I think there's a patch or upgraded drivers that will help. Also, the system won't recognize my MS Sidewinder joystick. The only way I can use the joystick is to use the generic Windows 4-button/2 axis driver which doesn't let me take advantage of the joystick's capabilities. Be sure to check out the KK266 FAQ page for more info on this stuff. In case you don't have the link, Here It Is. Good luck!
