so I'm having a New furnace and A/C done on my house this week and unfortionally do to its location required some significant work to extract the old one and put the new one in due to it being in a crawlspace with no acess large enough to fit a furnace thru. Well I have a nosey neighboy, you know the type the guy thats in everyones shit and always needs to know whats going on with everyon on the block I guess whiel I was at work yesterday he was asking the guys working on my house what was going on and all. Low and behold this afternoon an inspector shows up and now we have to pull a permit for the work, orginially thought it wasn't going to warrent it and then once we got into the work we would be able to button it up and not deal with that extra mess to save some money since I'm already dropping 8 grand into this project way more then planned. The work is being done by my dad's plumbing and heating company and we were using the opportunity since we had so much crap torn apart to do some updating of quite a few misc things.

So i'm pretty pissed at the moment at this guy because I know it was him that did it because its just who he is. Would you call him out on it? I'm thinking next time he talks to me when I'm in my back yard today or tommrow I make a comment about being anoyed about someone calling the inspector out and see what he says and if he owns up to it bitching him out over it and tell him to mind his own buisness, not sure if its worth it though.....still goign to cost me another 500 bucks in the end between permit and having to do some other misc extra work I was hoping to not have to deal with.

so you're bitching because you should have a permit but didnt get one?

bitching because a noisy ass neighbor should mind his own business. Permits only cost money they are pointless and there to generate money for the city. A they get you on the permit cost, and B they know that you are improving your house and will jack up your assessment. I trust my dad that he has been in the business forever and when he says its BS that they required us to get on I be leave him and most likely only bothered because the neighbor called the city about it and complained

People need to mind their own business, but the real problem is that government needs to get the hell out of your business. You will now pay government for the right to renovate your own house. The right to privacy protects you from other people (theoretically...), but not from government.

What is the permit actually for? I know it varies by location but I've had furnaces replaced in different states without having to pull a permit.

not sure yet my dad just gave me a call that his guys had to pull a permit. I'm at work and didn't ask to many questions. Assuming its something to do with the fact that they had to lower the furnace thru a hole in my living room lol.

You need a permit to be in your backyard. Don't let that sneaky neighbor catch you there.

I just had to get my hot water heater replaced and it required me to get a permit that cost an additional $100 on top of my other costs.

i'm pretty sure if you do anything to your house you need a permit techinically. and thankfully I also had my water heater replaced while all this was going on but it was buttoned up and replaced and the old one gone by the time the inspector was there so i didn't have to pull a plumbing permit.

I would definitely call him out on it. Not sure what I'd say, but I would let him know he is not welcome anywhere near my property ever again.

every redneck thinks they can install a new roof too...there is a reason for permits and it's not about the money.

Permits exist for consumer protection and so that you have some recourse against shoddy work. It may not apply in the OP's case but there is a valid reason beyond the money for them. DrPizza you live in the boonies in a small community and don't have the problem of not knowing the contractors, what it says in the building code or, what the law says regarding consumer rights.

The majority of permits are about the money. And, in many jurisdictions, you don't need a permit for a new roof.

yeah fucking cowtowns....

I am all for permits. The cost is cheap for any project and you know that someone else is going to kick back another's shoddy work.

Fencing used to be no-permit here and it turned into a trainwreck.

I agree. There are SO-OO many "fly-by-night" contractors out there who do shoddy work, that permits are a must.
I can only imagine the "whaa-aa-aa-mbulance thread the OP would have posted had his house burned down because the contractor did crappy work...without a permit. (in many areas, insurance companies won't cover un-permitted work)

Not only does the permit process cover the ass of the current homeowner, but also (to a lesser degree) it covers the ass of future homeowners who can feel somewhat safe, knowing work of this kind was done properly and inspected.

No, he's bitching because he has a nosy neighbor, get with the program.

I wouldn't pull a permit either. Permits exist solely to make money for the local govt.

most of the inspectors could not tell the difference between your plumbing and your furnace anyway. I have seen tons of "permitted and inspected" work that was very very scary.

I remember when my neighbors werent getting along.
John finally had enough of the guys on either side of him. He kills their kids, he kills their wives, he kills their parents and their parents' friends. He burns down the houses they live in and the stores they work in, he kills people that owe them money. And like that he was gone.
