jaggy video after Win2K install

This is strange. I installed Windows 2000 Pro on an Acer Aspire (K6 233, ALI mobo, 2 MB integrated ATI video) and now the screen image is doing something weird. Objects like text and edges of windows are not stable; the look jaggy and jitter a bit. After some observation the image is completely fine if CPU usage is at 100% though. How strange is that? I went to ATI's site and they say to use the drivers included with Windows. I tried different resolutions and refresh rates to no avail. I also unsuccessfully tried different video drivers that I thought may be compatible. Windows identifies the video as ATI RAGE II+ (I had suspicions that it was a Mach 64, but none of those drivers work). If you don't know a solution, could someone recommend a pci video card that is inexpensive and has a good company with good driver support behind it (maybe an original TNT)?

you need to upgrade some of your hardware. W2k takes/needs a more powerful system than 98.

if its only 1 to 2 megs of on board video and the card is integraded into the mobo than there is a good chance that it is a Mach 64 by ATI. I had those cards a long long time ago.....they are extinced. and i got to say that u are a brave man installing win2k on an old system like u describrd. i was kindda scared putting it on my p3550 with 128 megs..but it works fine...
anyhow the video is a problem of the old vid card..... and im sure win 2k didnt even bother installing older vid card drivers..... anyways what u did i can compare to a 80year old grannie getting a face lift to look sexy..it dont happen! an old pc and a ne os dont go together as wel

Yes, yes, the machine is "old" but that's not the issue. Win 2K actually runs great on the machine with the exception of the jaggy jittery video. 2MB of video is fine for 2D.

What's really strange is that I put in a PCI video card, and the video was still jaggy. So I don't know wtf is going on. Like I said, when CPU usage is at 100% the image is stable.

another follow up. I ditched 2000 and used a recovery disc the computer came with. In the device manager (this is Windows 95 B now) it said it was an "ATI Mach64 (Direct Draw)". I fresh installed ME and had the same jaggy problem. Windows ME recommended a driver that comes up "Rage/Rage II (ati m_64)" if memory serves me. Still looked jaggy. I tried the 95 driver the machine came with, and it took with ME, but still had some jaggies. Fresh installed 98 SE and the same driver name as ME was used, but image looks rock solid now.
