Jailbreaking iPhone Questions

So a co-worker asked me to jailbreak his iPhone 4 since he knew that I had JB-ed mine. I had told him that I didn't really know too much about the process because I was able to do mine through jailbreakme.com and I had a 3GS.

He didn't care and asked me to try anyways. I went ahead and downloaded the redsn0w app and went through the process which was really easy. The only problem was that he was on iOS 4.3.5 (had to downgrade to 4.3.4) and it seemed as though anything past 4.3.1 is tethered.

My questions are: is 4.3.1 the highest untethered JB? My 3GS is still running iOS 4.0. I was a little nervous updating the FW because I planned to sell it once I got a new phone. I felt that 4.0 was gold because it was able to be JB-ed so easy. Should I update to 4.3.1? Aside from game center is there anything else?

Thanks!

Groups. App groups make a huge difference and I don't think you get those until at least 4.2. Game Center gets on my nerves so I wouldn't upgrade just for that. Why did you jb? If you don't have a compelling reason to stay jb, you could always un-jb to get to the latest iOS.

I'm running 4.3.3 - from what I know it's the last one that is untethered and works on all devices (3GS, 4, iPad, iPad2 - it was via a .pdf exploit - jailbreakme.com). The .4 and .5 releases were minor fixes (closing the exploits mostly )

EDIT: I have an iPhone 3GS and an iPad2 3G - both on 4.3.3 and jailbroken via jailbreakme.com - Multifl0w, Activator, iFile, Safari Download Manager, ManualCorrect, NoLockScreen, SBS and Safari Fuillscreen (on the iPhone) are a must for me. Also Mark All button in the Mail application (manual selection was driving me nuts!)

4.3.3 is the last untethered jb. If he is on 4.3.5 its doubtful you will be able to downgrade to 4.3.3 because you need shsh saved and a copy of the 4.3.3 fw, which I couldn't find last week.

If you leave your phone jb check out bite sms for a texting app. Ridiculously powerful app. Tethering is a plus and so is sbsettings.

Thanks for the replies guys

Should I leave my 3GS on 4.0 or update it to 4.3.3?

One last questions - you mention bite sms. Does that app allow me to see what time people send texts? With the native texting app it doesn't show what time/day people reply unless its much later.

For example, my brother sent me a text before he left to come visit me. When he arrived I asked him how long it took for him to get to my house. He said just check the text and compare the time but the app didn't show the time

With bite you can activate individual timestamps for texts.

You can't get 4.3.3 unless you already have it downloaded. Or know of someone who has it.

I think the signing window for 4.3.3 is already closed. So you won't be able to upgrade to 4.3.3, unless you already did in the past and Cydia saved your shsh (which... well... didn't happen). So you're kinda stuck at what you're running now...

EDIT: For untethered jailbreak ofc. Tethered one supports all iOS versions on iPhone 3GS.

Ah missed that. There is a way to upgrade and jb without having done it before. Ill see if I can't find the instructions.

No, I already JB-ed my phone to 4.0 using jailbreakme.com. I'm pretty sure I had my shsh saved in cydia.

I was wondering if I should upgrade to a higher iOS or just keep it at 4.0 for selling purposes.

if you took a poll, 4.0 would win as the worst iOS release ever.

If you have a Mac, I'd use PwnageTool to preserve the baseband (not sure if that applies to 4.3 to be honest).

What's so bad about it? I've been using it for a while and it's pretty solid.

Also, what's a baseband?

it mainly affected the older iPhone 3G, but 4.0 was horrendously slow. 4.1+ somewhat mitigated this disaster. You also have missed some security fixes and 4.3 has a faster JavaScript engine for Safari. You may be the only person ever to call 4.0 "solid".

The baseband is the firmware for the telecom chipset. When you install an iOS upgrade, the baseband is silently updated and there is NO downgrade path. The only practical importance is older basebands could be exploited to unlock iPhones, important if you travel overseas or plan to maximize resale value.

When you use PwnageTool, you can upgrade iOS itself without touching the baseband. This isn't point & click like Jailbreakme.com so fair warning, you should do some research before taking this route.

Any difference in running PwnageTool as opposed to redsn0w?
I don't think redsn0w will preserve the existing baseband, but I could be wrong.

Since I have an ancient iPhone 3G, I'm stuck on 4.2 so I can't comment much on JBing 4.3 series.

I'm in the same position as the OP - with a 3GS running 4.0, and Jailbroken so I can get tethering. I would have to say that version 4.0 is "solid" as well, at least for me. Just turning off Spotlight search makes it run a lot faster. I would like to upgrade, but it is not worth it if I cannot Jailbreak it again. I've had no issues at all with version 4.0

Edit: Looked into it - it doesn't seem like there is an easy way to upgrade to 4.3.3. I'm going to wait until iOS5 comes out, that should have a Jailbreak available right away.
