I'm getting pretty desperate here. My iPad sold on ebay yesterday and I'm trying to restore it. I tried many times yesterday with various versions of the firmware to no avail. I then tried to reset it to factory settings and left it sit overnight. The screen showed the Apple logo with a moving ring of light transposed overtop of it... I don't know if I was supposed to get a progress bar, but it sat there for about 7 hours on that ring of light (Apple's RROD? HA!). In any case, this morning, I tried to reset the settings (not full factory reset) and that worked! However, I still cannot restore.

I'm currently on 4.3.1. I don't remember what I used to Jailbreak as it was a very long time ago and I don't even know if that would matter? Just now I tried to restore with the Shift + Restore to 5.0.1 and get error 2002 and now it wont even turn on or go into recovery mode! I'm trying to charge it hoping it was just drained. Before this time, I got error 3194 and then 1604 and another one I didn't write down.

Any ideas?

i dont know about ipads but when i was toying with my iphone, i'd have to put it in "super pwn" mode to actually shift restore.

can't you just update your itunes to install the latest 5.0.1?

I am on the latest iTunes and I manually downloaded 5.0.1 to use Shift+Restore since I think it's ridiculous to have to download the firmware each time you try to restore. I will try to uninstall and reinstall iTunes and see if that helps. It seems like something on the iPad is preventing this.

Google Tiny Umbrella.

You'll need to put your computer into DFU/Recovery Mode.

This is done by holding the power and home button until it resets then waiting about 5 seconds then letting go of only the power button and continuing to hold it.

If done right you should see a symbol showing "please connect to a computer" or something along those lines and it'll show a picture of a cable and a iTunes symbol.

If you see that then plug it into your computer and try doing a restore via iTunes first.

If that does not work then try downloading other versions or using Tiny Umbrella to block the calls home to Apple that could be causing a restore to fail.

I've been exactly where you are just a month ago when I sold my iPhone 4. I've been through it as well on my iPad 2 just screwing around.

From what I understand it's all but impossible to actually brink your device. It's just a struggle getting it into the proper recovery mode and finding a ipsw restore file that it "likes".

I was able to get the iPad booting again. Not sure what was wrong there.

I tried restoring in recovery mode and in regular mode with Tiny Umbrella and without. I tried 5.0.1 and my current 4.3.1. No luck with any of it. It all gave error 3194.

This is about the biggest nightmare I've ever had. I just want to restore it to factory settings, and it shouldn't be this hard.

I just found iReb and used it to get into a "super DFU" mode. I then tried to restore using 5.0.1 and then 4.3.1. Both resulted in error 3014.

Anything in your hosts file that is preventing you from accessing Apples website to validate?

if you have access to any other computer:
download itunes
put ipad in DFU
connect
let it download firmware and try again.

What OS is on there now? Have you tried doing a full restore from within the iOS menus?

Tiny Umbrella was adding stuff... I assume you don't want me to use that? I removed everything that was redirecting apple.com. Still no change.

I don't have access to another Windows machine at the moment. Though, I may try to soon since I'm losing patience. I just ran through these steps and 20 minutes later (after the download), I'm getting the same 3194 error! Why is this method different than the one I'm using?! I'm just manually downloading the latest ipsw and doing a Shift+Restore to save the download time/bandwidth.

I'm currently on 4.3.1. I don't know what you mean by "doing a full restore from the iOS menus." I have tried to reset factory settings in the Reset menu, and I've reported that this just sat at the same Apple screen OVERNIGHT!

Wow. I just got access to another computer and did a Shift + Restore from my thumbdrive of the exact same 5.0.1 ipsw that didn't work on my computer and it WORKED! What on EARTH would cause a problem like this? I even uninstalled/reinstalled iTunes on my computer.

Glad this is over and needless to say I won't be getting an iPad again.

Most likely it had to do with something in your hosts file. One of the 3000 errors that you had received had to do with something in the hosts file.

I installed iTunes on another computer and plugged in the iPad. It was detected as being in recovery mode and iTunes was able to restore from the latest version. The iPad then rebooted normally. Plugging it back into the original computer allowed the last backup to be restored and a normal sync is currently underway.
