My 2c w/o reading more than the first page of the thread-

Its a movie about how Bond become Bond. Missing gadgets kind of sucked, but /shrug, maybe thats developed later. I liked it. As someone else said, favorite drink, favorite car, favorite women. The embassy & chase scene before made me smile because he's so rough around the edges, not the super slick super cool spy we know/knew.

I loved it!! And every car in the parking lot of the Ocean Club was a Ford product, along with the plugs of the Sony Erickson Phone capabilities.

Excellent, excellent movie. I'm almost willing to say it's the best Bond movie I've ever seen, and I've seen them all.

No stupid gadgets like radio controlled and/or invisible cars. No blazing through a thousand bad guys with a single rifle. No never being hit by a single bullet. Let's get this clear: GADGETS AND EFFECTS ARE RUINING MOVIES. STOP HELPING THIS CAUSE. GADGETS SHOULD NOT TAKE THE PLACE OF AN ACTUAL PLOT.

Instead we got dialogue, wit, humour, and a rough-edged Bond who's maturing into the double-oh agent role. A Bond who pretends that killing doesn't bother him. A Bond with serious hangups about women, who are both repelled and attracted by that. I'll be picking this up on high-def DVD as soon as it becomes available. Bravo Daniel Craig and the writers of Casino Royale!

I thought it was a good movie...

for all the people saying bond is too rough around the edges in this movie....well, he's supposed to be! He's a new bond learning to become 007. you want him to be suave, wait for the next movie.

to those who asked why he drove the ford, again, he's still rough around the edges. Remember the scene when he took the dress to the accountant and soon found out she picked out a taylored tux for him as well. after he got dressed, he liked it and took noticed of how nice he looked in the mirror, and you can begin to see bond is learning to become suave. You also see him learning life lessons from M as she smarten's him up and teach him to trust no one. I don't know if I like M teaching bond, but it works.

the ending was genius! that was pure bond...

the beginning chase scene was awesome!

I wish they bring back the spy factor in the next movie though.

the weakest part of the movie was the villian. he was non-existent and they better do a better job with the villian next movie.

I quiet enjoyed the poker scenes, but that's because I like poker. other people may find it boring and I can understand why.

overall I give the movie a B+

Craig will be a much better bond than Brosnan, I can totally see him pulling it off. He may possibly be as good a bond as Connery. Not based on this "bond-begins" movie, but you can already see he will be a great bond. I never believed Brosnan as a bond since golden eye. One thing I will say about Craig is that he seems a bit old to me, but the dude is cut and represents bond well.

edit: I do wish they bring the gadgets back in the next movie. I agree that the gadgets should not make the movie, but bond is not bond without the gadgets...

again, tracing the arch-villian via SMS is so lame in any intellectual level.

that's not what I'm talking about..

I was talking about the very last scene where you see the guy pull up to his HUGE mansion thinking he's gotten away with the money only to be shot by bond. he walk up to him, looks down, and says "name's Bond, James Bond"

if that's not an all time "Bond" moment, I don't know what is

by far the best Bond film post-Connery, maybe the best ever. if you've read the books, you'll have to agree. this one came closest to the real bond: slightly crazy, slightly evil, fallible, and a man whose vices cause him real trouble. bond is a true-anti hero, and that means we don't always like him. the face might not be quite right, but that was bond up there, all right. i was amazed they actually reproduced the ball-whipping scene, but disappointed they skipped bond taking loads of meth and getting so whacked he could barely play.

i hope whoever is in charge of the franchise right now makes more like this one. they could remake them all in this style, and i'd pay to see them.

i should add i found the action scenes to be the most exciting of any i have seen in a long, long time.

Since I have only seen the last four plus this one, I can only judge on that basis.

This is by far the best Bond movie Ive seen. Craig is head and shoulders above Bronson. Sure Bronson looks slick and sauve but other than that he is totally unbelievable and so are the movies he stared in.

I've read some of the books, and I entirely disagree.

I can't say as though I would even care to own CR on DVD.

All 4 of them? I liked them too, but it's unfortunate that they drew it out by centering it around a poker tournament. The Bond films are supposed to be the epitome of action films and this one falls way short. For a 2h45min film, they could have had loads more action secquences. and less meaningless dialogue.

This is based on the first Ian Flemming Bond book. One would expect their to be more dialouge in a movie which is supposed to develop the character. This follows the book very closely. For the most part the rest of the bond movies dont follow the books that much.

The last four Bond movies were beyond medicore compared to Casino Royale.

Casino Royale was about how Bond became Bond and why he has all of his idiosyncrasies. Bond in the books didnt start off as the bad ass sauve 007 agent.

This movie was about the development of Bond, that is why there wasnt the typical(and often unbelievable over the top nonsense) action scenes every 5 minutes. It's also why there wasnt much focus on a villian in the movie. This movie was about character James Bond.

The thing is, quite a few people love Bond for the above bolded, and they may find this one lacking in what they love. Others love Bond's personality, and the traits specifically developed in this movie. While watching CR, I found myself cringing at realizations of the underlying psychology they're trying to develop for the character (which I love, every great character has problems) but I also found myself missing the ridiculous car chases that I love so much. Seeing a DBS in a chase would have been the cherry on top. I loved it anyway, I can't see to wait what they do for the next film.
Also, his laughter during the torture scene was comedic gold...perfectly timed.

apparently you didn't read casino royale. the majority of the book centers on the poker games. and there's very little action other than bond taking copious amounts of a vast array of drugs (all at once, of course), having sex, and getting the crap beat out of him by the bad guy.

This was the best bond movie so far.

IMO it does for James Bond what Batman Begins did for Batman.

Hence his discovery of his favorite drink, his favorite car, and his favorite type of woman.

And why after this, he goes on to be a cool, aloof spy who will never fall in love with another woman, and who will never trust anybody again.

Granted, they did a modern twist on the story, but timeline discontinuities aside, it is supposed to be how Bond becomes the spy we all know.

I loved the show. Enjoyed myself greatly. I liked Brosnan, but I really thought this new direction was good. Just like I enjoyed the latest Batman, this seems to be a trend where they "return" to the roots of the character and explore some of the vulnerabilities and deeper secrets that were not so obvious in the previous shows.

Ditto.

I enjoyed myself thoroughly. It was back to his roots.

Craig was a good bond, he wasn't as suave as Brosnan but he was a good bond. I enjoyed the previous Bond films for what they were, entertainment.

Some bits of film didn't make sense when I was watching and left me thinking WTF until later on.

The ending was rather abrupt and kind of BS but hey the film was good.

I definately like how they made Bond more realistic and f0cked up the free running stuff. That would have killed it for me if he was able to do all the free running stuff without falling over a lot. Made it that much more realistic , he is Bond and not Jackie Chan!

PS the Italian not Indian girl in the film was ridiculously fine!

I thought the movie was excellent. Stop ANALyzing every second of the film and enjoy it. I do agree that the last 30 minutes were weak, but over all I'd give it an 8/10.

Because it's blatently obvious that it's just a payoff by ford to put it in there. I mean, the only scenes its in is like a ford commercial.

Not only that, but when you think Bond car, you think "BMW" or "Aston Martin"... Bond is a classy fellow, he needs to drive classy vehicles.

This is the beginning stages of bond. Ford suit perfectly.
Im thinking about going to see this movie again this Friday

At first I wasn't really liking it....but then my bf explained to me about halfway thru that this is sort of a prequel and then I was like..OHHH..and then a few days after seeing it I decided that I actually liked it.

I was dead set AGAINST Daniel Craig as Bond...he's just not really...attractive...enough. But now I'm like..."well...he's all rugged and manly". lol..I guess I went in (like most everyone else) with a preconceived notion that Bond should be all charming and "Bond-like" with cool gadgets and whatnot...but I like this "pre-bond" too now. Still unsure about Daniel Craig's attractiveness but I don't mind him too much as Bond, i guess.

So from a girl's perspective...I'll give this movie a 7/10. I so LOVED that chase scene in the beginning....that dude with the awesome jumping and such. How exciting!

Tell her to go to the bathroom before seeing it.

It's really long.

No kidding, I was caught unawares... And I thought the movie ended like 4 times, after he woke up in hospital, after they kiss on the beach, after he wrote his resignation letter... I just didn't think it was wow, plus the dialog and some of the scenes were pretty cheesy. The jokes were funny, when he made them.

*SPOILERS BELOW*

I have a question... Can someone please explain her death scene in the elevator carriage at the end? She was locked in but appeared to remove the key from the inside. Then, when all baddies were dead, she refused to be rescued?!?!

I thought it was a solid movie but this part is confusing.

she betrayed him, she helped the bad guys...she didn't think she deserved saving..so she let herself die.

What's so confusing about that?

She betrayed her country, she betrayed her boyfriend, she betrayed Bond, and she betrayed the bad guys. She was dead either way.

I thought it was OK.

It was more like the Bourne Identity than James Bond.

It seemed disconnected at times too but all in all a good movie.

yup.. thought exactly the same thing.. or Mission Impossible

But definitely not James Bond.

And that last scene was stupid (where he finds the guy w/the briefcase). It felt rushed + contrived.

See that..

I guess the confusing part was the characterization that they were both "running away together" prior to that. If you're running away with your man then to hell with the world right? I think the acting betrayed the plot a bit, she showed no inner turmoil after the hospital scene (she was fine prior to that though). The director could've handled that a bit better I think. Somehow I feel suckered into that twist at the end, but I guess that's just me.

Otherwise outstanding film, refreshing for a feature film these days.

as long as we're just tossing opinions around. . .

I liked Sean Connery as the best Bond. I liked Timothy Dalton as 2nd best Bond, maybe even tied with Connery.

Saw one with the Brosnan guy, prissy twerp, can't stand to watch him. I guess some women like his looks, everything about him grates on me.

Didn't like those old Moore movies either. Saw one where he went out in space. Right!

I quit watching those movies when I woke up to the fact they're just live-actor cartoons. I might catch the new one for its novelty, someday on DVD.

For pure escape the Borne movies are good, getting better. MI 3 was pretty good too. Wish they'd give more screen time to those gorgeous Bond flick chicks, some of them are really spectacular.
