Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, and his wife, Jane Sanders have hired prominent defense attorneys amid an FBI investigation into a loan Jane Sanders obtained to expand Burlington College while she was its president, CBS News confirms.

Politico Magazine first reported the Sanders had hired lawyers to defend them in the probe. Sanders' top adviser Jeff Weaver told CBS News the couple has sought legal protection over federal agents' allegations from a January 2016 complaint accusing then-President of Burlington College, Ms. Sanders, of distorting donor levels in a 2010 loan application for $10 million from People's United Bank to purchase 33 acres of land for the institution.

According to Politico, prosecutors might also be looking into allegations that Sen. Sanders' office inappropriately urged the bank to approve the loan.

Ms. Sanders' push for the liberal arts college's costly land acquisition was cited in a press release by the college when it shut down in 2016.

The Sanders claim the charges are politically motivated but it began when Obama was still in office, in early 2016:

"When she came to that college, it was failing financially and academically," Sanders said. "When she left it, it was in better shape than it had ever been."

Sanders declined to answer further questions about the matter, other than to say he would "let it play out" and again said an attack on a politician's wife or family was "pathetic."

Yves Bradley, the chair of the Burlington College Board of Trustees, told CNN he was informed of an FBI investigation by the college's dean of operations over a year ago and that he believed the investigation's focus to be the the college's disastrous land deal.

I hate politically motivated investigations, but Im not sure this really is.

Vetted by whom? I mean look at the two main candidates. You had Hillary with all her legal issues going back 30 years and Trump with the Trump University controversy working its way through the civil courts.

You're going to have to explain how on earth he is a hypocrite because nothing you've said so far makes that case in any way.

Are you trying to say that because he wants to change our tax laws to tax the rich more he is somehow a hypocrite for following our tax laws as they currently are? I don't think you thought this through. Does this logic apply to other areas of public policy? Don't understand your point here. My household income was around $180k and my effective tax rate was 13%. That's with one mortgage, property taxes, 401k pre-tax deduction and day care bringing my AGI down. I still paid almost $24k in taxes. There's no magic deduction for me.

They have an unconscious desire to destroy themselves because they feel worthless and that worthless feeling gains extra force by the acquisition of worldly reputation. Because I don't take kindly to being called a liar when I am not. Looked up my last check weeks stub. For a 7 day period (Mon - Sun) I made IRS taxable, $3,267.55. Gross was a few hundred higher. FED Withholding $594.31. FED EE Social S, $210.20. FED EE Medicare $49.16. For a total of $853.67 of taxes for one week. You do the math. It'll be more now, because I just changed from married to married but held at higher. Because I had to pay $4,400 this last year in taxes. Because apparently I don't pay enough already.
