Trust me with government agencies there isn't any checks and balances to prevent this. When my sister worked juvenile corrections for the state of Nevada they had mandatory furlough days. Basically you had a to take a day off un-paid every 2-week pay period. However it was corrections and there was minimum staffing levels and it wasn't like the detention facility was being run with more than required for staffing. So someone had to come in and work OT to cover the furlough day of another employee. So basically the state took a shift that could have been filled by someone working straight time and made it into a shift that was covered by someone working OT. Talk about stupid. Not to mention the additional time that it took for management to schedule the furlough day and then find someone to cover it.

There is just no emoticon for this insanity.

The works a shit ton of hours, doing a crappy job. He deserves to get paid.

Please name me ANY private business that pays a janitor a quarter of a million dollars a year. Hell, name any that would even consider paying a janitor six figures.

BTW, here are the requirements for BART janitor:

1. Knowledge of janitorial procedures
2. CA driver's license
3. High school grad or GED
4. Ability to lift 50 pounds
5. Willingness to work weekends and off-shift hours

Or find one that pays around 50-60k, because that's more like what he would have made someplace with a sane CoL and no OT.

The average paramedic gets $31.7K and the top 10% of paramedics get $55K a year. So the best paramedics get paid one fifth this guy's salary to save lives.

Not sure how an engineer-paramedic is different, but...they play games too:

or firefighter paramedic:

EMT?

Madness!

If the guy actually worked during those hours more power to him but I feel people who put in some unrealistic hours more often than not are just gaming the system.

You'd be surprised, sometimes there is just that much work to be done. If he's the only janitor for the entire station I imagine he's quite busy. Just hearing whatever makes it on the news it sounds like a lot of crap goes down at that place. Probably not uncommon having to scrape brains off pavers and tracks etc. I feel once you have to deal with human remains and/or waste that deserves a decent bump in pay.

Where I work there's often lot of OT in the summer and Christmas time because of all the vacations, and not enough staff to cover. It's great when you can actually put down 24 hours of OT in less than 2 days. It actually happens. Looks very weird on paper but just the way it ends up happening.

^^

The question is why isn't there more staff. The barrier to entry is not high to be a BART janitor.

I suspect he works very hard, although by the end of his 16 hours he's probably pretty inefficient.

There was a guy here working for the subway who also made six figures but by all accounts it was legit work. Basically he just took all the shifts that were offered to him because... well... it paid time and a half. Plus it paid even more on holidays so he worked those days too.

The criticism in the press wasn't against that guy, because he was doing his job well - just too many hours. The criticism was against the highly inefficient union and management that allowed such overtime to be paid out for years and years. Plus the pay was too high to begin with.

I don't know what the BART guy does but nonetheless I find it hard to believe that janitorial job is really worth US$60000 a year. US$29 an hour is hard to justify, and $43.50 an hour is just crazy.

Given the math that I have seen so far, I don't see how this can be purely attributed to "hard work". Seems like the amount of "hard work" required would be damn near impossible to keep up for a year.
