I see that Japan has the same electrical sockets as the US? just different voltage? So I can plug in cell phone chargers into them since they are generally universal?

Just different voltage. American to Japanese works but Japanese to American needs a converter.

Booked a tripped to Japan for about a week, Landing in Tokyo (NRT) on July 19th and Leaving from Osaka (KIX) on the 27th.

Havent booked hotels yet, any tips from anyone that has been on what to do? where to stay? It will be me and a friend. I am going to pick up a travel book to do some research but also hopping someone that has been can give me some pointers!

Thanks!

Only 8 days that is not worth it?

No they don't. Well, not sure but I've never needed any for products I've gotten in Japan.

They will work, but you could be damaging the item depending on what it is. Some things are designed for a range of voltage and will be fine, but things like a rice cooker/hairdryer/etc, I would be very careful with.

Exactly. I use a converter for my two rice cookers and whatever else we get from Japan (appliance wise).

DONT EVER DOUBT THE JAPANESE GUY (that's me)

Visit a love hotel over there too, only 3-4 hours. =D

If/when you walk in, the lighted pictures of room indicate what's available - expect lots of themed rooms. The two prices you see indicate a short stay (couple hours) or overnight. Follow the lights to your room...

Check out the weirdos in Harajuku. Most of the guys were androgynous when I went in 2000. Don't know if it's still like that in Harajuku.

Any suggestions on getting a rail pass? from what I understand its 300$ for a week. Not sure if we need it everyday, but will need to get from Tokyo to Osaka which one way is 180~$ ?

its on you to do the calculation to see if it's worth it or not depending on where you will be traveling to. if you are going all over the place then it may be worth it, but since you are there for only 8 days I wouldn't spend so much time going city to city... just my 2 cents.but if you are flying out of narita on your way out you will need to do a round trip so it may be with it

Rail pass isn't much use in Osaka, but is quite useful in Tokyo.
I got one when I was there for 2 weeks, but that included bullet train from Osaka to Tokyo and back again so it was worth it.
Most subway trains require separate tickets, so for one week and only one bullet train trip it might not be that much use. The subway and local trains are cheap anyway for day tickets.

Good guide for all parts of japan and advice on things like train tickets.
