Booked a trip to Japan for about a week, Landing in Tokyo (NRT) on July 19th and Leaving from Osaka (KIX) on the 27th.

Havent booked hotels yet, any tips from anyone that has been on what to do? where to stay? It will be me and a friend. I am going to pick up a travel book to do some research but also hopping someone that has been can give me some pointers!

Thanks!

Disney world in Japan is expensive as hell and not worth it. From NRT you'll need to take a train, either the Narita Express (easier) or the regular subway line (way harder) to Shinjiku or a major rail hub. Then continue on to different parts. I'd recommend seeing the Sky Tree or the Tokyo Tower. Both magnificent. Also Akihabara (Major tech vendor area) and its a weird cosplay galore place.

I forgot. Kinkakuji (gold plated building) is a nice place, lots of food options and I mean, gold plates building, pretty awesome.

You have to visit Osaka-jo castle. Believe me, you won't regret it. It's the best military museum on earth and I want to visit again before I die. That place was intense.

Bah. Stay away from Akihabara. Obnoxious place. Check out the Imperial Gardens over Tokyo Tower. If you like sushi, stop by a shop near Tsukiji. Ueno Park is pretty cool. They have a zoo, and a few museums there as well. You can check out the Meiji shrine in Shibuya and then head to the Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku. You can go to the top and get a great overarching view of the entirety of Tokyo. Pretty amazing view.

Try to make a stop in Hakone on your way to Osaka. Beautiful place, and they have a really good open air art museum. You should be taking the JR Yamanote line and it has a stop in/near Odwara, IIRC. That's a quick drive from Hakone.

Thinking about getting a hotel in Tokyo for the first half of the trip then the rest of the time in Osaka, good idea?

Soapland, lol.

Besides what was said,

Osaka aquarium
Ramen museum in tokyo
Onsen

If you want to cheap out for places to stay you could use hostels. Most are decent in japan.

If you were staying around Tokyo - Kamakura is a nice day trip: temples and "The" statue of the Buddha ("Daibutsu" ). And being near the coast, it'll be cooler than the city.

Via Inn is nice. However, most hotels have similar prices and they don't really differ. Also, Yen is cheap so the dollar can go far. Ueno has some great spots to eat...

few questions, will you be more into sightseeing? do you want to just take in the experience of tokyo? do you want to go shopping? what is your budget for hotels? i've stayed at some decent ones for 7000jpy/night. how many different towns / cities do you want to go to? i've been to japan about 15 times at this point. can you or your friend speak any japanese? just a little bit will give you an exponentially better experience.

For tokyo, Ueno is definitely cool. check out ameyoko-cho if you're into street shopping for cheap goods that are decent quality. knockoffs and real deal stuff can be found here. It's what you would think of a typical asian outdoor market, except that you're in japan and it's alot cleaner than you would find in other asian countries. there's also a great microbrew bar a few subway stops away from ueno.
good shopping in shibuya, ikebukuro as well. check out some neko cafe's lol. i've been to the tokyo tower and it sucked. it was one huge ass line and i was mobbed the entire time. also pricey. you can get a better view at the government building, and it's free. haven't checked out the sky tree yet, but i have a feeling it would be the same way. skip anything in roppongi, it's a tourist trap.

tsukiji market is really cool to check out if you're into food culture. great places to eat around there too after you walk around in the morning.

if you're into ramen, the shin-yokohama ramen museum is pretty awesome. (someone incorrectly mentioned it as the tokyo ramen museum earlier, but yokohama is a 20 min subway or train ride away from tokyo)

if you go in august you can climb mount fuji. it's painful but not that bad.

also spend time in kyoto, it's just plain awesome. this is kinkaku-ji i believe.

not quite true. yes it's been better the last few months, things are still expensive over there. i remember when it was 120 yen to the dollar, and the last few years it's been 70 to the dollar which was butt rape. now it's about 95 to the dollar which is sort of ok but still not good. a beer in tokyo will run you 800-1200 yen.

I went on a work trip about a year ago and got about 3 days of walkabout because I work very productively. I had a great time visiting the Imperial Palace, the Ueno Zoo/Park (there was a big school visit that day, it was really cute how excited the kids got when the panda got up), any shrines you can get to (Meiji, Zojiji is really close to the Tokyo Tower... you kinda have to walk through it when you come from the JR line). I stayed @ one of the Prince hotels in Shinagawa, which was great as it had very convenient access to the JR lines and good food close by (incredibly easy to follow the trains even without speaking Japanese... and they are *always* on time. Not kidding, people starting freaking out when they announced one of the trains that comes every three minutes was running a minute late). I didn't have a great shopping experience, I was looking for more authentic traditional Japanese stuff, and even with a teammate to take me around shopping it was not easy to find in a reasonable time in Tokyo. That's not to say its hard, its just not easy.

We do not speak Japanese, would like to do mostly sightseeing, night life, check out the more modern side of japan, get to check out all the electronics, ride the bullet train. Hotel wise I have a ton of Hilton/Marriott points so I will be sticking to hotels where I can just use my points.

Definitely go to Tsukiji, it's awesome.

You can't just go there anytime. You have to go like 5AM in the morning to really see what's going on...

Again, OP, check out Osaka-jo on Osaka. If ever there was a museum for men, this would be it.

Yeah I know, but it's worth it. At least it was for me.

i've stayed at the hilton shinjuku and its nice, it's close enough so that you can get to the yamanote line which pretty much takes you around the city.

Kamakura , Asakusa. Harajuku is neat just for the cosplay madness (though doesn't seem as prevalent as it once was).

Honestly I enjoy Yokohama more than Tokyo.

I visited Tokyo for 2 weeks, you won't forget it.

Make sure you visit Akihabara, the electric city.
