Enjoyed is not really the right word... I was fascinated by the story, but it's not the kind of book that I'd read for entertainment.

Yeah, your right. Enjoy is probably NOT the right word for it.

Glad you got some information you found enlightening is probably a better way to put it.

not necessarily. it'd be more like American schools omitting portions of American history that involved massacring of Native Americans.

True, though I don't think they do that anymore (at least in my high school years (1997-2001), we discussed the massacreing of Native Americans in depth).

oh, i wasn't saying that American schools did that (although, i don't know if they did or didn't). i was just saying it was a better analogy than brigden's evolution one.

You're looking at it from the wrong perspective. Whether the material is scientific or historical, the fact remains that an institution is altering a concept taught and accepted by mainstream public.

It's ridiculous.

i agree, it is rediculous on that level... but it is also rediculous because these people refuse to admit that anything wrong was done. it's adding insult to injury to survivors and relatives to victims by dismissing them as liars.

Off topic but on, I remember seeing a show about an exhibit going around about the Japanese biological weapons program in China dubbed Unit 731. If what they were saying was true, it was absolutely horrific, right up there with the holocaust. The exhibit was going around trying to educate everyone because the Japanese seemed to be in complete denial of everything that had happened.

but what are the motives?

covering up Pearl Harbor and Nanking are attempts by the Japanese to hide atrocities they did....to alter history....spread lies.

in that respect, they are completely different circumstances, imo.

Flyboys should be required reading.

Agreed.

Did you read that on my recommendation?

Yes. I remembered your thread about it and I saw it at Costco so I snatched it up. for you!

I also read it based on the excerpts that were posted by Brutuskend. I could hardly put it down from the time I started reading it. Almost ruined my vacation (Brtuskend did warn me not to read it on vacation, but I ignored that advice) Girls running around in front of me half-naked on the beach, and I was reading about raping, murder and unbridled pillaging.

As I matter of fact I also picked up the book Flags Of Our Fathers by the same author, almost a companion book in my mind. I am reading that this week, really great book as well. I might wind up liking it a bit more though.

I heard the only reason America kept quiet about this program was so we could secretly obtain all the data from it.

Yep. The scientists hid the data because they knew that would be the only thing that could save them, and sure enough the US bargained with them in order to get the info. :|

We still remove evolution pages from textbooks? The only thing remotely similar that I can remember is that a few school boards pushed to allow creationism to be taught alongside evolution.

I went to a Catholic high school, and the Biology teacher flatly stated that we would be taught neither Evolution nor Creationism beyond a five-minute lecture on each.

Evolution is still a theory. It's still arguable. You can't argue with 200,000 dead bodies, though.

Yeah, they teach that now. What they still don't teach is the War of 1812. "Oh, and there was a war in 1812 and the White House got sacked. But that sucks, so lets talk about the causes of the civil war!" - in most classes it gets a brief mention of about 1 sentence. My Honors US History course spent maybe 15 minutes on it.

Wasn't that the one that lead to the Monroe Doctrine?

yeah I've thought hard about this and whether I should stop buying japanese cars. Although my family is actually from Taiwan, and Taiwan benefited from Japanese rule, this denial is inexcusable.

On the otherhand, american passenger cars are almost all garbage and supporting some greedy union doesn't sound much better either. The Germans have actually been very good about owning up to their past actions and supposedly have paid out a lot for this. Too bad their cars cost an arm, leg and testicle.

i won't buy a japanese car either. i get flamed for it here on ATOT everytime i post it. i'll still post it tho.

Still just a theory? Says who, you? What are you credentials?
It is a shame that the scientific use of the word "theory" has been ruined by the layman's use. A theory is a scientific truth that has not been disproven not just some random idea on how something works.

However the rest of your point is valid. Having many thousands of dead bodies had a pretty signifcant impact on how people feel.
When I was in high school taking US History (something like ten years ago) we went over the War of 1812 in as much detail as time constraints allowed.

Anyhow, I know some Chinese-American people who have family members (or themeselves) will refust to trust any Japanese person all because of that entire WWII thing and the fact that to this day they do their best to deny it.

ya i'm korean born, but i'm an american.

however, i also can't deny my heritage either. fact is, the japanese committed atrocities during WWII that ranks up there with Hitler, Atilla the Hun, the Inquisition. you name it, they rank up there as one of the cruelest groups of people ever. and they continue to deny it. it shocks me that people are willing to just ignore all that just for their convenience.

That's true, and the lead scientist remained unrepentant. I also believe he was a member of the Japanese Diet for quite a few years.

Much of their ability to deny their crimes can be blamed on McArthur and the US government. Because of the fear of Communism they were afraid of destabilizing the country by forcing the Japanese to acknowledge what they had done. Like the Germans had to do.

After winning the war, U.S made an agreement with Japan that U.S will not mention Unit 731 in exchange of its biological data. The guy who created and directed the horrible experiments even became a principle of a major Janpanese university under U.S administration in Japan.
Holocaust was bad, but at least Germans just killed most of those people in gas chamber whereas Japanese did all those crazy experiments on people. It's even worse that that U.S closed its eyes on this matter in exchange of data.
