lol I'm glad your qualified eye can distinguish between korean and japanese.

On the other hand, your OP means something like can you speak japanese?

ohhhhh okay.

What does いいね! mean?

Japanese and Korean are super easy to distinguish between.

I wouldn't have known if え weren't posted. I know that's a Korean character, but I don't speak Korean outside of a few TKD barkings.

日本語をできるの?

Roughly speaking, it says 'Can you speak Japanese?'.

日本語を話すことができるの?
日本語を話せるの?

These are better but you may be talking to a native speaker...

Haha, you guys crack me up. I posed いえ, which is romanized as ie, or no, although really I should have posted いいえ.

The second character, e, is definately part of Japanese hiragana. If you don't believe me, you can find it on this wiki page -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiragana

Or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%81%88 is an article directly on the character.

Korean and Japanese are easy to distinguish, you guys are just bad at it

You even posted the first character, い, yourself, Nik.

my high school Japanese from 12-13 years ago tells me that is indeed a Japanese character, and I do believe it is hiragana alphabet?

Your OP looks very, very Japanese to me. I can only recognize "Japanese" and the pronunciation of a few of the hiragana.

Yes. Rry. The characters are very distinctive. Korean uses characters with lots of right angles, rectangles and ovals, and Japanese characters are far different. I can usually even tell between Chinese and Japanese, but not always. Just because I'm whitey doesn't mean I'm not observant.
