You've got an economy that's been stagnant for 25 years, an aging workforce, one of the highest rates of suicide in the world, and huge social pressure to succeed...

Arguably the stagnation is due to the baby boomers hanging on for too long in their cushy positions. This is a problem around the world including Japan. The elderly people may just have to live on less then what their expecting in their old age. I'm with chucky that I don't really see a downside to this. Japan will be better off in thirty years (assuming the world doesn't turn to shit for other reasons.)

I think the whole loss of sexual intimacy reflects that people are pushing are rejecting a lot of the artificiality of the gender relationships that exist in Japan and even in the US too. Men and women are supposed to play roles that don't always make sense in a modern economy. Women tend not to be as interested in sex for sex's sake. In the west they're frequently doing it to snag a guy into a long term relationship. Studies show that a woman's interest frequently declines significantly after a few years in the relationship.

This is something that is seen in some animals as well. Environmental conditions making birth rates increase or decrease 9I am not saying survival, just plain birth).

Humans might ave the same, but our own minds have a tendency to fubar things up. Some areas (like India) have MASSIVE population concerns, but I do not see any reports on their birth rate subsiding. But Japan and some European nations are seeing their rates subside?

The problem is, we have some very base instincts, and when we, and society, over-associate things we start seeing cigars as penises....

I think you're right about the social pressures - and additionally I think it has a lot to do with their media. My observation is that their sexual entertainment involves a lot of fantasy, such as hentai animation. So they learn to get their gratification from that stuff rather than dealing with real people.

But I don't think genetics is correct. I strongly suspect it has more to do with their diet. Almost all of their meals include soy. Consumption of soy lowers testosterone levels in males and overall androgenicity in females.

White Americans are the only American ethnic group that is declining today to since they dont have enough kids. Asians, Hispanics, and Blacks are all increasing in numbers...So, white people make more kids.


The low birth in Europe and the US, Canada, Australia is why we need immigration from the third world btw. Without a large population of young people our systems wont continue to work.

All of the countries listed there are European [White], with Japan and one other Asian nation on the list. Japan is bad but Italy is worse off.

Keep in mind that Western Europe is declining as fast as Eastern Europe is, but due to immigration from the Muslim world the population is steady or growing, so thats why Western Europe is not showing as declining in that Wiki link [same goes for the USA, Canada and Australia actually].


The nations that are doubling their population every 15 years are the third world countries. And those same countries, many of them, wonder why their kids cant find a job! And the young people end up protesting about the lack of jobs [ie-The Arab Spring]. If your population is doubling every 15 years and yet the number of jobs isn't doubling every 15 years then there are going to be problems..[But sure, blame Gaddafi instead].

Dating and prostitution are both more expensive than porn. I won't argue that it is an adequate substitute, but it is a substitute. Anyway, in recent years their porn industry has grown substantially while apparently they are having less sex. Though correlation does not prove causation, the growth in porn there does suggest that low libido is not the reason. Japan is one of the three big epicenters of pornography on the planet. Think about it.

Well the thing is they are very clean. Japan is very hygenic but most don't shave down there because their hair is very thick and black which causes the Freddy Mercury look if you know what I mean. I don't know why their teeth are so screwed up. Even if they're clean and straight, it seems once women hit their late 20's something goes horribly wrong with their gumline. Maybe it's from all the smoking and I don't know a single Japanese that doesn't smoke.

I don't think procreation automatically builds real wealth. I think it's simply one of the factors that will increase the chances of GDP growth but at what cost? A healthy ratio of population growth with strong global competitiveness and productivity has to be maintained and in the case of Japan (or any heavily indebted nation) they have to do even better than that.
