Japan wants their own people to come back to those type of jobs....America just wants a cheaper alternative and is using that as an excuse to outsource.

Engineers are gonna get paid more and more... Glad I'm in the profession. (industrial programmer, not quite engineer)

And college tuition, books, and engineering lab fees continue to rise ever higher. I'm sorry but 3-4 hours of Calculus II & III homework every night is not tenable when I have to work full time to afford my college expenses.

It is obviously not condusive in Japan to have kids and it has been that way for quite some time.

Anyone know why?

Of course you don't because you are too busy doing the same thing here.

Corporate profits became their number one priorty. Family and kids not allowed.

In fact their men started dying at age 40 from working continous 80 hr weeks.

The country is dying a deserved death just as the U.S. is at the hands of the Corporations.

You ever been to Japan? The work ethic of people there put Americas work ethic to shame.

I wonder how much video games (the massive assortment of immersion game) available is contributing to a declining in educated individuals in certain fields (namely those you need to dedicate a lot of time studying too)

Actually there is more to it then that. Japan is a small Island and they are running out of room. Tho it is true that the birth rate is very low due to not enough people to work at the jobs and when someone croaks then some poor slob not only has to cover his/her job but that job too!

USA has lot's of land and don't worry Dave, we still import quite a few immigrants and well, they have 5-6 kids for you on your dime of course! So...... It all works out in the end! Keep working hard tho, they need your taxes to educate them! The only problem out of every 500 kids being brought up in the USA only a few are worthy of engineering status. The majority will be drug dealers, gangsters or fast food workers. We've dumbed down enough for a few generations I think.

If I were looking I'd be going to China for my search they seem to have an abundant of engineers over there. If that's even possible?

Maybe one day engineering will be cool and a highly paid position then maybe kids around here would take interest instead of being a lawyer.

There is a difference between "work ethic" and forced by corporations.

Being forced != work ethic

Actually there has been a huge glut of lawyers in recent years, which has driven down the wages of many lawyers tremendously. You can find articles on the NYT, WSJ, etc. about this subject. There are simply too many law schools churning out too many lawyers, which can make it difficult from those who attend the lower-ranked schools to find jobs. It is only the top students at the top schools who are earning the $160k+ starting salaries - the pay drops off quite steeply after that.

It will stabilize, higher wages and better hours attracting more people to engineers. Also, at some point there is a limited supply of finance and art jobs, so wages will drop in those sectors if there are too many candidates applying for them.

Maybe you should spend less time on your homework then? I spent like 10 hours a week studying in college and ended up with a great job. You can have a "C" average in engineering and still get a $50,000/yr job just fine.

EDIT: not to mention something called "college loans", why work now making 10$/hr when you can get a loan and pay it off once your graduate and make 30$/hr ? (and its subsidized by the government)

How is a loan a silver spoon? Unless people that never screwed around with there credit all of a sudden are guilty for being in a position to get a loan..

Not to be off topic, I feel the need to reply to this. As the child of a single parent family with an income < $30k/year, I still managed to pay for college. Suck it up, take the student loans (the government also gives grants for low income students). The only excuse for not going to college is a lack of desire to do so, or screwing yourself in a hard way in high school. It doesn't take a silver spoon to get an engineering degree (graduating with a BS in CSC in spring). That's just an excuse for the entitlement crowd to whine about how nothing's fair and everyone's out to get you.

just got to take away their anime & Nintendo until they learn their
Thevenin's Loops & Node theorems & know their electromagnetics
well enough to derive Snell's law from Maxwell's equations.

i think the trick is giving them hands-on experience at a young age,
whether it's with Softimage or a soldering iron.

in a non-flammable section of the house, provided they are grown
up enough not to torture one of their siblings with it.

oh well, i suppose a coloring book about dinosaurs and a Radio
Shack circuits kit would be sufficient in the short term.

when they ask for a Bridgeport milling machine for their
16th birthday, those Japanese parents will know they've raised
them right.

if those Japanese kids want electricity for their anime and their
video games, they're going to have to get with the program.
