Off with their heads! Seriously. Aside from Red vs Blue episodes, I have absolutely no need for any of those, and they cannot die soon enough for my taste. For that matter, I tend to run NoScript, since 90% of the scripts on web pages are just designed to track what you're doing for unscrupulous marketers. Virtually none of them actually add anything significant to a web page, just a bunch of annoying and pointless animations or other equally annoying garbage.

It would be nice if we could eliminate Flash and Java. But a lot of game sites use Java and as for Flash, videos are going to HTML5 sooner or later. But what happens to all the archived videos on sites like YouTube or golf instructions which were done in Flash ? ? Will something convert them to be viewable on an HTML5 browser without the need for Flash ? ?

One thing I don't get: I never installed Java (and when I go to the Java site it says I don't have any version installed), but all sites with Javascript code seem to run fine. Is this normal? Well, a few sites I get a 4-8 second hang the first time I load them in Firefox, like these ones:

Once whatever the first "hang" is initialized, I can browse anything on my comp just fine though. I don't see any need a standalone Java app at all. Are there specific sites that still need a standalone Java app?

I'm guessing that a standalone Java app will not make Javascript (or websites in general) run any better then? So I don't need to download it at all?

The standalone java application will not change the functionality of java script. Unless you use website that require java or use applications that need it, just uninstall it. If at a later time you determine that you require it, download the latest version from Java.com.

At the very least remove anything but the latest version from your machine.

I uninstalled Java when articles were urging people to. But they never said to reformat hard drives because of damage that might already have been done. Would reformatting be safer?
