Just out of curiosity why do you need Java. I've never needed it and uninstall it from any PC I work on. Maybe I'm missing out on the internet but I just don't see how it's worth the risk.

A lot of internet based services require Java to run, For example, www.canyourunit.com

We have to have someone ask this questions in each JAVA thread! PLEEEEASE! I need it! If it doesn't interest you then don't install it! End of story!

PS: I usually do tests on Pingtest.net and it requires JAVA. Hope this satisfies you.

Just because you don't use any apps that depend on Java runtime, doesn't mean no one else uses such apps. If you don't need it, don't install it.

You see Java used a lot in different industries where you have a web app interact with some usb device connected to the computer to perform other functions, like a scanner, or a signature pad, or various card reader/writers.

Someone asked this question last year and I found out that I didn't need it after all. Sure some good interent speed tests use java but I decided it wasn't worth the risk plus the time needed to keep it updated and re-configured. Removing it also lowered my attack profile which is always nice.

Also, if you need java for a program you can always disable the plug-ins for your browsers if it's not needed for browsing.

If you do any Android development and are using Android Studio or Eclipse, Java (the JDK) is needed. Outside of development purposes, I haven't seen much of a real need for Java.

I use a couple programs that rely on having Java installed. Minecraft and JbinUp but that's about it.
