Java: Jini and RMI

I was going to use RMI to create a java server, but I see that Jini is a possible alternative.

I jsut want one server with multiple clients. Is RMI outdated or is it hte way to go? Is Jini the replacement?

Any other Java technologies I should consider?

I assume by Java Server you mean a Java client-server application. Which can cover a very wide field of possibilities and different solutions will be best depending upon what you are trying to do.

RMI is not outdated JINI uses RMI in the background.
Another common option is web services (SOAP)

Various probably less useful to you options you can research are:
JMX
EJB - more geared to enterprise
Plain sockets - lower level api that RMI uses
XMPP using Smack API and a jabber server
CORBA - a bit dated now though still valid and widely used
JMS messaging


Personally I quite like RMI for simple client server comms particularly using Java 5 which has dynamic stub creation
