Java with AMD64?

Hey everyone, i seem to be having a huge problem. I can't get Java to run after installing it on my amd64 3000+ regular windows XP. I download the regular Java from the web site and it installs fine ( take forever though! ) but when i go to open it; it just hangs or makes my computer restart. and no java applets will run. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Instead of selecting the "regular Java" from Sun's website (i586), look to their Windows AMD64 version, and see if that fixes your problem.

I looked on their web site and all i can find is a AMD64 for solaris? Any other suggestions?

Bottom of the downloads page for j2se 1.5:

go to
java.sun.com,
On the right, Popular Downloads, J2SE 5.0,
In the middle of the screen, Download JRE 5.0 Update 5,
Select "Accept License agreement" and on the bottom choose Windows AMD64 Platform - J2SE(TM) Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5.

That should do it. Although I'd expect J2SE x86 to be able to run fine on an x64. But I don't know that much about it.

yes i thought it would run also, i installed it on another x64 computer and it ran fine, no problems at all. Now with this one it will install but wont allow me to use it.

Well i ended up doing windows updates 4 times to download everything, then went to install java and it works fine now, crazy. anyway thanks for all your help
