Ron Jaworski is out at "Monday Night Football."

ESPN announced Wednesday that the analyst would be removed from the network's signature broadcast beginning in August. Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden will operate as a two-man booth.

Jaworski will remain at the network and appear on various programs, including "Countdown" and "Matchup."

The longtime ESPN analyst had been in the MNF booth since 2007, replacing Joe Theismann after one season. He was supposed to add a respected football voice to a broadcast that included Tony Kornheiser. He dutifully played that role for two years until Jon Gruden was brought in as Kornheiser's replacement. It was all downhill from there.
When Jaworski appears on other ESPN shows, he's an insightful football mind who breaks down X's and O's with clarity. His "NFL Matchup" program is the best on television for real football analysis. There was none of that on "Monday Night Football." Jaworski stuck to talking points, spoke in cliches and offered little, if any, breakdown of what was happening on the field. It was like a college professor being forced to teach third grade and not having any idea how to relate to his new surroundings. The addition of Gruden exacerbated the problem. Suddenly there were two football guys in the booth and they seemed to be in competition for who could say the most without saying anything at all.

This paragraph, from a December article in The New Yorker about Gruden, was a perfect microcosm of Jaws' time in the booth:

When it was Jaworski's turn, he issued a stern proclamation. "Call me crazy, but I'm really excited for Tyler Palko tonight," he said, and a roomful of skeptical sports producers erupted in laughter. Jaworski had given himself the thankless task of building up the Chiefs, praising them as much as he could without putting his own credibility at risk. Perhaps viewers would buy into the idea, however far-fetched, that Palko would emerge as the night's underdog hero. Later that day, as Jaworski was making a cup of coffee in the ESPN bus, he tried the line again. "Call me crazy, but I'm excited about Tyler Palko," he said. He exhaled. "I've got to sell this," he said to himself.

He became a carnival barker, not a football analyst. That may have been his own doing or based on the suggestions of ESPN producers. Regardless, the mentality to promote the game rather than describe it, which seems to be shared by Tirico and Gruden, is a big reason why "Monday Night Football" has become borderline unwatchable in recent years. It's not a football game anymore; it's a promotional vehicle. (That's only going to get worse when Gruden is given a bigger stage.)
Jaws was out of place. His football knowledge didn't change, it was the forum he had in which to disseminate it.

ESPN played up Jaworski's new role in a press release, but it's hard to consider this anything but a demotion. He goes from being in the booth for the network's marquee telecast to fighting for airtime on "Sunday NFL Countdown" with Cris Carter.

"I am grateful for having the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of working on 'Monday Night Football' the past five seasons with Mike Tirico, Jon Gruden and so many other talented people behind the scenes who make the show so great, and I look forward to bringing my passion and knowledge of the game to more fans in more places than ever before on any and all football topics," Jaworski said in the statement.

The last two-man booth on "Monday Night Football" was Al Michaels and John Madden. ESPN has used three-man teams since acquiring rights to the telecast in 2006.

I get tired of the "announcers" constantly stroking each player on the field. Just announce the game and leave all the "He's the best in the league at blah, blah, blah" about every damned player on both teams.

Gruden used to irritate the hell out of me, but gawd-dammit, that guy KNOWS football. He spends something like 40 hours per week, watching films of games, evaluating plays, and studying. (but his constant commentary still gets annoying sometimes)

I always liked Jaws quite a bit, but I didn't watch much MNF this year. Was he really that bad?

Jaws is awesome on everything except MNF. I don't like the MNF crew at all; Gruden is terrible, though I do like him in those QB training videos where he acts like a real person. Something about MNF seems to make everyone horrible. :hmm:

One of the main reasons why the viewership of MNF has declined is because it's now on cable.

Jaws should stay and Gruden should leave. I cant stand his dumb comments all the time. He is always on someones balls everynight about how they are the best but yet the next week there is a new best at the same position.

Yeah I used to really look forward to MNF when it was on ABC. Who cares if Al and John weren't the best commentators, it was still entertaining. Ever since the move to ESPN I basically stopped watching.

Its hard to get used to football without Madden. I still hear an obvious comment and flashback to the Madden days

Here I thought I was the only one who picked up on that bullshit...

I am torn on what is more annoying about that dickbag...

The fact that everyone is the best at xxx in the league / history of football

or

how he tries to emphasis everything to the extreme with his hands and that stupid smug face...

I don't care if he is a football genius...he comes off like a tool-bag 99.999% of the time when that hole under his nose is open.

I used to LOVE those guys on Sunday night football...Joe Theisman...and the other two...

Not so much for their insightful knowledge of the game...but Joe and the other guy (Paul Maguire) ...used to go back and forth like a couple of old ladies...and the other guy would always get him riled up...

Every time I hear Jon Gruden, he's talking about Julius Peppers. Doesn't matter who's playing, he'll find a way to work in Julius Peppers. And it's made especially noticeable given that he emphasizes the "P" sounds in "Peppers" and ends it with a soft "S" (instead of a Z sound).

They need to bring back John Madden. That guy was ridiculous, but fun.

LOL I thought I was the only one who love watching those guys on Sunday Night Football. Theisman and Maguire bitching at each other was hilarious. With Mike Patrick as play-by-play, they're basically like the three stooges

I loved that group. Joe would get so worked up, it was great.

I'm writing a letter to the ESPN to see if they can get "Dandy" Don Meredith and Howard Cosell exhumed and back in the booth, it would be much more exciting than what they have now.

The article is spot on. Jaws is great on shows like NFL Matchup, but sucks on MNF.

I can't stand Gruden in the booth. He should be coaching anyway, announcing is for old people...you're still in your prime, wtf are you doing announcing? He isn't good anyway.

Dude, Joe Theismann was terrible. I almost felt like he was looking at himself in the mirror whenever he talked. The guy was really in love with himself.

I hated him as well...I liked the other two guys...

For me it was the first time that in any broadcast I had seen one of the commentators be a 'quote' prick 'quote' to the other guy without stroking his ego...

Paul Maguire was that guy for me...he used to make Theismann look like a fucking moron most of the time...then they would get into arguments on air...I thought it was hilarious...definitely better than listening to the round of melon heads they have had the past 5 years plus...

The last two they have had I can't believe someone actually picked them because they thought they would not irritate the shit out of the audience.(Korn-hole) who looked like the kid that got his ass kicked in gym class most days...and (Gruden) who comes off like he is in total AWE of people's talents when something happens on the field...

HELLO DUMB ASS they are super athletes, 0.01% of the world...they can run 25 m.p.h., they have a vertical leap of 48 inches, they can throw the ball 70 yards on the run and hit a dime...yes we know they are special...you don't have to tell us how special they are EVERY SINGLE PLAY...EVERY SINGLE WEEK.

I especially loved how he would add in his coaching days for a particular play...

It could have been a 22 DIVE play off the left guard...

"At Tampa...that was the x22 jet, reverse A-B split JUMBO package" worked great...
