These have become rare and the price has gone up on them. I paid $199 shipped from JandR 3 months ago.

Are these really any better than the second version?
$279 shipped these are the newer version. I ordered these with the sub package for like $449 shipped. I'm happy with it.

I would also like the info on whether or not the NSPIIs have been "dumbed down" compared to these.

What made it HOT was the overnight shipping for $9.95 (plus, admittedly, a silly $10.95 handling charge) and the excellent customer service. I ordered them on SATURDAY and got them on MONDAY from FED EX, which freaked me out. The driver even called me and apologized at 8:30am that she was very busy and she was sorry but could she meet me at noon. I agreed. Then I got my eBates Email about noonish.

Other web sites wanted $83.75 and $53.45 etc for overnight.

The blurb I saw about the Bose lawsuit was here:

NSP1 original vs II

So the NSPII isn't really "dumbed down", it's just a diffferent design. They sound the same.

That being said, if you can get a set of the original NSPs for a less, sounds like they are the better deal.

Apparently the Mark II version has been 'dumbed down' a little bit due to a lawsuit from BOSE.
From everything I've read, the 2nd generation of NSPs isn't a whole lot different (sonically) than the first version. However, the first version is "tried and true."

Heinrich, Which sub are you running?

Apparently the one to get is the Sony SAWM40 but I can't find a good deal on it. I'm probably going to get that DTS one from Parts Express Parts Express

I have the original ones and they are some bomb a$$ speakers. I push a 10 inch JBL sub, I think itis a PB10, I forget the model number, but they are great.

Actually, from some of the other reviews and opinions that I've read in the other audio forums, the Parts Express sub is slightly better than the Sony. The Sony is quite popular, but the Parts Express is a "sleeper."

I bought the Parts Express sub last Feb to go with my NSPs and my HK 310 and I love it. The best component in my system. If I had a bigger room, I'd get another!

Four satellite speakers and one center channel.

How good is this? Is the bass enough or must add a sub?

You should probably add a sub. The speakers sound awesome though and are fairly discreet(size-wise). My roommate bought this set last year and it sounds great. Don't hesitate to buy these...in fact, I am considering buying a set for my bedroom for a "smaller" home theater so I can lay in bed and watch movies.

I personally own the JBL Studio Series S-310's and S-312's and the S-Center and I love them. I also own the 15" PSW-D115 JBL sub, but like so many others, have been the victim of a burned out amplifier inside the sub enclosure. Of course the amp is out of warranty and it will cost about $200 to repair. For a $799 retail sub, you should expect more quality than that.

I looked into buying from a authorized dealer when I got mine. I got it for $279 shipped just for the five speakers. Here is the price from a authorized dealer

$549.99 Buy.com wanted something over $400. I'll take my chances for almost 1/2 the price.

Yes...and...warranty for .. speakers? The only speakers I've ever had trouble with were car speakers. Been through tons of home audio speakers never had a blown or defective one.
