So the story continues...

While she still sleeps for the winter, I have collected parts to install on my Red 1991 turbo Miata.

At the end of December I pulled the turbo for a rebuild, a rebuild kit had come with the car, so I figured why the heck not. Well, as it turns out, the turbo shaft had been badly damaged by heat and scored by some of the bearings. Add to that the fact that the turbo rebuild kit was not quite the right kit for the frankenstein turbo the car had come with, I decided that the turbo was a loss and began hunting for a new one.

I found a deal on CL: two new turbos in the box, 60 trim compressor, $225 for both. Found them, bought them, done and done. Swapped out the wastegate flange from the old turbo onto one of the new ones and I think I'm back in business. A view of the carnage after all was said and done:

In addition to the turbo bits I have also gotten: aluminum lug nuts, stainless brake lines, quick-bleeder screws for the brakes, a stainless clutch line, aluminum radiator, red radiator hoses, new heater core, new heater hoses, hella supertone horns, front strut bar, NB shock mounts for the rear suspension, and a new intake manifold gasket.

My computer's SD card reader is on the fritz, so pictures are at a minimum, unfortunately, I will update more when it is fixed. For now, here are a few on the parts to install:

In the pipeline: new intake manifold bolts, coolant overflow bottle, oil breather bottle, new stereo and speakers, four 15x7 wheels for auto-x slicks.

Work starts this Sunday. :awe:

How much power are you looking to make?

The plan right now is to get some practice in at 8psi, which should be around 160-180whp if i can get the tune dialed in. Then, if that's not enough, drop in a boost control solenoid and go for 210-230whp.

extra loud BOV. zoom zoom psshhhhhhhhh zoom zoom psshhhhhhhhh

Haha, it is VTA and quite obviously so... :sneaky:

What class are you planning to run for Auto-x?

SCCNH has pretty broad categories, I'll be in "modified" because of the turbo. It's a fairly relaxed group of guys and I'm not really looking to take home a trophy, actually, I don't think they give out trophies.

Ah ok, cool. I've seen tons of Miatas autocross (who hasn't) but i've never seen a turbo/super run an SCCA autox

2 new turbos for $225? LOL.

I hope you like pieces of compressor wheel in your combustion chamber...

=shrug= sure I could have spent $900 on a ball-bearing turbo, but frankly the compressor wheel shattering has, in my opinion, a very low probability. I am only counting on 20-40k miles of use out of the turbo, which at the rate I drive my weekend summer car is about 5 or 6 years. If it does ingest some metal at that point, assuming I still have it, I can buy a used engine and transmission for $500 and get right back at it. Or use it as an excuse to buy a 2004 Lava Orange Mazdaspeed Miata, or a '99 10AE Miata, or a 1994 M Edition

I highly doubt the comrpessor wheel will disintigrate before the seals go. There's a spare engine anyway, though. :awe:

...oh yeah... and the extra 1.8L block and 2 1.8L heads I have in the basement :awe:

I've usually seen them in OSP/SM2 around here. I plan on running STR myself.. give those NC Miatas and S2000s a run for the money I hope.

Why is your toolbox sitting on wood floors?

My apartment doesn't have a garage. I work at JLee's garage, a barn, and my parking lot as I am able. I've got a 5gallon bucket with a tool organizer that I fill up with the tools and parts for a particular job from my main tool cabinet.

Are those the cheap chinese knock offs with super glued compressor covers? Or are they real garrett turbos?
You could of easily bough a used 14b from a dsm for $150, new 16g's are $500.

Like this thread and that MR2 turbo, I'm seeing people going through all the processes of installing a turbo on cars I would have loved to have done it to.
