So how many tools have you thrown so far? "omfg why can't shit just fawking work right, always something @#$!&$#%?!!!!1!" Fix every seal in the engine and it starts leaking oil out the tail light :awe:
This is why I don't do this sort of thing. I once lost my temper just mounting a bicycle tyre on a road bike and ended up turning the Rim into a Taco with my hands.

I went to work on the leaking thermostat housing today... fucking bolts are stripped out. The one thing I ever took the car to a garage for, diagnosing and fixing the coolant leak, the totally missed the coolant leak and have stripped my t-stat bolts. FUCK ME. I am so pissed off...

Female threads, in the t-stat neck which for all intents and purposes is the head. Bought a helicoil set today. Waiting for a cordless drill to charge and then we'll be off to the races... maybe.

How deep are the holes? Might just be able to pick up some longer bolts at the hardware store and call it a day.

So, as I mentioned the bolts in my t-stat housing were totally stripped thanks to the one servicing this car ever got at a garage D: not happy.

My old man was kickin' all day helping me work on it and suggested heli-coil inserts to fix it, so we got the kit for them at Auto Zone. Also needed to buy a drill at Sears. The idea is that you drill out the old busted threads, tap the hole, then put in a coil that makes the original thread again. Magic.

Before, with stripped threads:

Next I drilled and tapped out the hole. Don't forget to use oil on the tap, otherwise it could seize up. Also cover everything up so you don't get metal shavings where they're going to make you have a bad day.

Next the insert goes in with a special tool:

You just screw it in, then snap off the tab and presto, new threads!

Besides that, the car was still spitting up oil out of the catch tank, so again the old man I headed out for parts, took about 2 hours to get everything we needed to adapt a 1/4" hose to a 5/8ths hose, but we got everything squared away, and now the oil catch tank drains right back into the block. Recycling is eco-friendly, right? :awe:

Still have a little dribbling clooant leak from an old hose on the t-stat housing, but only under high-loads, and it's VERY slow. Probably going to try a little RTV and a new/better hose clamp.

She's getting there... stay tuned.

Is that a PCV catch can? You don't want that catch can draining back into the sump. It's full of blow by and other nasty shit. Just sniff it compared to your oil cap and see what I mean.

I guess it is a bit dirtier that what's in the sump... but there's a considerable amount of oil coming out which is the concerning part :\

if it's PCV, then isn't the oil in the sump exposed to the same blow by? or is there something different in a turbo? (e.g. is that oil from the turbo unit and exposed to the exhaust stream?) :\

>>i don't own anything fast, so this turbo stuff is new to me<<

thanks

nice repair by the way... much stronger now.

A lot of turbo Miata guys ditch the PCV system because, like exdeath mentioned earlier, PCV systems get totally borked by high boost unless they are designed for it.

This is oil being blown out of the head for some reason... see below. Oil for the turbo comes out of the block's main galley I think and is returned directly into the sump pan.

What's weird is that with the previous turbo nothing came out of that port when I drove it, not a single drop of anything. The old catch tank (which was a Poland Springs bottle) was bone-dry when I swapped it out.

What I think is happening is that with the turbo the engine is flowing full boost right up to redline, unlike the old turbo which was tapering off at 5-6krpm. The oil in the head is being forced up through the valve cover baffles by the increased amount of blow-by. By tapping into that return in the block I think I've actually given the blow-by gases another place to escape instead of going up though the head. So, instead of oil actually draining back into the block, blow-by gases are actually traveling up into the catch tank from the bottom, rather than forcing oil out of the head, kind of like spraying water out of straw.

At least that's what I think this is what's happening after reading several pages of stuff on catch cans in turbo Miatas from miataturbo.net

Also, I may pull the valve cover to see if the baffles are all in places and sealed up. If one or more of them came loose then that could also explain the problem.

The starter kit, which has the handle/tool, 1 tap, and three inserts, was $30 at Autozone. I think inserts come in sets of 10 for around $10. You could probably find them cheaper if you did some hunting. If you're super serial about it you can get the complete metric set, inserts, tool, taps, etc from McMaster for $220.

Also, I had a feeling you'd be interested in those inserts

Finally, a little bit of good luck: the e-brake indicator light on the dash magically started working properly! Now it turns off when the e-brake is off.

It's the little things...

Another little update...

Did a double-threat seafoam treatment, intake and oil sump. I figure I run 93 all the time and the fuel system already had cleaner though it from the winter, so it's okay. The oil sump is being cleaned in preparation for an oil change this coming weekend. The intake side of things... oh man... left about 4 miles of smoke during the "drive it aggressively" phase of the treatment. So much worse than my 1990 Miata with 208k on the clock! Must be from the richer turbo tuning. Maybe its all in my head, but it felt like it was running a little better afterwards.

Another fun fact, I happened to win a free fuel injector cleaning and flow bench test from injector-rehab.com back when I was building the car. The 550cc injectors were rebuilt and were within a few cc’s of each other.

Registered for the first SCCNH (sports car club of NH) auto-x school this Saturday! Assuming I get transmission oil/diff oil/engine oil changed on Friday I will be there!

Also going to borrow a friend's helmet camera for some fun in-car footage.

Did the SCCNH auto-x school today, and I couldn't be more thrilled with how the car did and how I improved.

I got up at o'dark-thirty, loaded up my Miata with tools, oil, coolant, helmet, etc. and headed off down Rt 4A with some bitchin' rock tunes cranked for a 50 mile/80 minute drive to the NH Motor Speedway auxiliary parking lot. Once I got there I unloaded my gear to make a 'mini pit' for myself.

I planned for as many contingencies as you can with a 4-5ft^3 trunk. I staged my car then shot the shit with some of the other drivers. There were some interesting rides there. Here's my car in the staging area:

From left to righ we have a turbo Acura RSX of some flavor, Honda CRZ on r-comps, and a Cobalt SS. I will repeat that: CRX on R-comps.

Some more interesting cars here, notably a REAL '65 Cobra. That thing got driven HARD.

And my buddy Jeff just picked up a Miata that has a 5.0L Mustang V8 stuffed in it!

And to represent american muscle, we have the 650whp fully race prepped Camero. There was also a Mustang GT500, but he arrived after my camera's batteries died.

So I started off doing the large skid pad, just driving around it at a sustained speed to get used to the car's ultimate grip and to dial in tire pressure. I used a $25 compressor/gauge jobber I got from harbor freight, did the job perfectly. Fronts at 34psi and rears at 28psi balanced their grip about perfectly while giving both sidewalls about the same roll-over. Moved over to the small skid pad to practice slower cornering, which worked beautifully. Just set my line with the steering wheel and mostly used the throttle to steer the car around, it felt... so... good... *spooge*

The next station had us accelerating through a set of gates, then simply braking to stop to get a feel for the car's braking behavior. Next, they had us basically do 'lane changes.' First they were easy, then got progressively harder, eventually encouraging you to start leading into and setting up turns. The next iteration was pretty fucking ballsy: you drove full-throttle trough some gates going straight at the instructor, and when you felt like you were about to run the guy over he'd point the flag either left or right for a lane change maneuver. In the final stage you'd basically go balls out, make a hair-pin around a single cone, then go balls out back to a braking zone. It was really fun trying to estimate your line without any guidance.

We broke for lunch, then two mini-courses were set up. The first one was an opening slalom, to a TIGHT Chicago box, to a constant slalom, into a stop box. I ran that one for about an hour, got around 8-10 runs in and really had my line dialed in at the end. 1st gear through the course was INSANE weight transfer and acceleration, but a bit too rough to control easily.

Lastly we ran a mini auto-x course with some fun sweepers, a tight 180, and some chicanes. I ran that 6-7 times and nailed it. The car felt so good, especially when tire pressures were dialed in, I could just toss it into turns and adjust for whatever happened with throttle. I am so excited to run it in a real auto-x and see how I stack up to other drivers and cars.

I also noticed that the car handles VERY differently with and without a passenger. With a passenger it feels more settled and better balanced, but without a passenger it feels more responsive and agile.

Sadly the helmet cam was epic fail. The hard top on the Miata was so low the camera basically got a nice view of the top latch and not much else, especially because the windshield was washed out in all the videos. I will try to be less suck the next time around for that!

Edit:

A number of the instructors were very impressed with my driving/the cars performance. I got some really good advice from the instructors and it all just clicked: the car, the advice, and my confidence behind the wheel. The turbo, although it spools late, was a really good power level. Even at lower (3-4k) RPMs in 2nd gear could get the back end to scoot around.

Very nice. One of these days I'll make it..

Dood... srsly... must go.

Also, the car attracted a lot of attention from the other drivers/instructors. I had a lot of questions about it, a lot of people seemed impressed with the engine bay setup, and one guy even called the color as Porsche Guards Red! Thanks to everyone who helped me get the car on the road *cough*JLee,Black2NA,Andy,Nick,Will*cough* this is the start of some epic fun.
