Hmm, my guy has always called it the fan belt because it's driven by the fan.Originally posted by: Roger
It's not called a fan belt, it's called an alternator belt.

In that case, try this one: How many lug nuts are on a VW-Porsche 914 2.0?

On a Volkswagen Type IV engine, what does the Fan Belt drive?

I will refrain from answering these and let the others guys guess for awhile
The alternator is the only component driven by belt on those motors and it went right off the crank. The fan was on the back of the motor towards the front of the car.
I think it was the narrow 4 lugs, those cars were a POS.

The fan is directly connected to the crank snout, the fan has a pully on it's outer diameter, this drives the alternator, the fan is in the rear, not in the front.

Both of those answers are wrong.
Dang it! I like my car, thank you. And my little 914 will pull away from just about any other car of the same vintage when the road turns curvey.Originally posted by: jemcam

Wow, even got Roger on the 409 question???
Answer: The combustion chamber is wholly in the cylinder. The top of the 348/409 deck is not perpendicular to the bore, as a result at TDC there's a 'orange wedge' shaped combustion area on top of the piston. The face of the cylinder head is flat.
