Sometimes it depends on which store.. the cuts vary, but in general loose fit is looser around the hips and waist. Boot cut is slimmer around the thighs and rides lower on the hips.
Definitely loose fit. I was jeans shopping yesterday for my son and noticed a huge difference. Boot cut now (it's different than it used to be) is more of a retro fit - lower on the waist, narrower through the hip and thigh. Loose fit have extra room in the thigh and seat and in my opinion, tend to even run bigger through the waist.
If you're buying Levi's, 550's or 560's are good choices for a looser fit.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't boot cut jeans made only for women?? I thought guys jeans came in either regular, loose, or slim fit. Am I missing something here?
Boot cut jeans were originally made for men. Think about it, boot cut. They were made so that men could wear these jeans to work and have them fit over the added thickness of heavy work boots on their lower shins.
Also, check out the levi's website. I'm a levi's kinda guy, and know that there are a lot of different styles. Regular fit, loose, slim, wide leg, euro, boot cut (about 4 or 5 varieties of this cut alone), metro, relaxed...
