(CNN) -- Guitarist Jeff Hanneman, a founding member of the heavy metal band Slayer, died Thursday of liver failure in Southern California, the band said in a statement posted on its Facebook page. He was 49.
"Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure," the statement said. "He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed."
Slayer was started in 1981. It made its major label album debut in 1986 with "Reign In Blood," which included two songs -- "Angel of Death" and "Raining Blood" -- co-written by Hanneman.

Hanneman has been off the road since early 2011, when he contracted necrotizing fasciitis -- most likely from a spider bite -- a quick-progressing disease that literally eats away at the flesh from deep layers of skin and tissue. Exodus' Gary Holt stood in for Hanneman starting in February of 2011, while Pat O'Brien joined the band when Holt returned to Exodus during 2011.

Slayer is awesome. His death sucks.
He had been pretty sick for awhile, I almost wonder is 49 is too young or whether he wouldn't have wanted to get old. Sucks that he had to bow out of the last bit of touring Slayer did, but at least the last album was a true return to form and Hanneman had some pretty big influence in the song writing.

Slayer fan for over 25 years. Those lyrics with the music kick ass.
