I need to buy luggage. I've looked around and went store to store. I searched on Amazon.com and on ebags.com. Everything is soo expensive. What I need is a large rolling upright and a garment bag. It would be nice if I could buy the two as a pair.

I went to Macy's today because they're apparently having a luggage sale. JESUS, $300 for a rolling upright and $150 for a garment bag?!?

I think I may just go to Target tonight and pickup some luggage from theie Eddie Bauer collection.

Our luggage is "Ricardo of Beverly Hills" brand that we got at Costco. It's at least 5 years old now, and it goes on several trips per year, and it's showing no real signs of wear yet. It's ~$129 for a set of 4 (large roller, medium roller, carry-on roller, and small duffel).

I just went to macys for the sale and got a medium sized rolling suitcase and a small carry-on rolling suitcase for about $120 each. (samsonite, originally closer to $300 each)

Marshalls or Khols when they have a sale on Samsonite luggage.

It is worth it, I have luggage cases that are older than me.

Target has decent stuff as mentioned. Kmart has the American Tourister line or something like that which is surprisingly good. TJ Maxx and Marshall's actually have some decent cheap stuff as well.

I have top end Samsonite, the Ultra series. The set that I got was 90% off at a Mervyn's store closing clearance. I got about 12 pieces, including 4 different size rollers for ~$300.

That said, it has held up remarkably. If you buy cheap luggage, expect the wheels to suck and die quickly. I had a roller case with sleeve bearings that literally melted out because they got so hot from rolling. You pay for quality.

Sears is cheap

I've got some forcast stuff that has seen an international flight, and over 50 domestic travels over the last 5 years. It starting to show some wear in the corners but otherwise it's held up well for the $100 it cost.

I don't see much reason in spending $300+ on something that TSA is going to violate and the luggage manglers are going to play soccer with.

That seems decent. I don't know who buys luggage at full price - it's probably on sale more often than not.

Because eventually, your cheap luggage is going to fail while they are playing soccer with it, and your shit is going to be lost. You pay for quality.

Now, if you get LV luggage, you pay for quality, material, and the designer name.

I got two bags at Marshall's more than 10 years ago. They've probably got 200k miles on them, and while they're not much to look at, they're still quite serviceable.

I wouldn't spend a ton on luggage - too much can happen to it. Some parts of the world see a lot of theft, others see a lot of loss. Even domestic travel can be really tough on luggage, and the hassle of getting any reimbursement from an airline isn't usually worth it.

The really cheap luggage is at the Flea Markets, swap meets, swap shops, whatever you call them in your area.

They'll work fine for a few trips through an airport and will cost you like $15 for a huge rolling one.

I bought a set a few years ago and it's still usable.

I managed to score a Tumi duffel and garment bag from a family member for free. They are nice bags but I'd never pay what they ask for them.

I have some of the Eddie Bauer stuff from Target too which has held up well.

The moral of the story here is the reminder that one should not shop at Macys if you value a good price/utility ratio.

Cheap luggage falls apart quickly. Also, buying individual bags can get expensive, so try for a set.

Look into Samsonite and Hartmann, they make durable luggage and offer a limited or lifetime warranty.

If you go to Nordstrom Rack, I know the one near me has carried some nice Victorinox and Swiss Army sets...don't see many Samsonites but they do carry the occasional Tumi (which look great and are designed well, but quality might not even be better than the first two I mentioned...good warranty though).

Myself, I had to buy a new suitcase for my auto show gig last year, so I bought a large 26" Samsonite 4-wheeler on eBags...there was a clearance and a 20% coupon as well. I think I paid like $150 for a $400 bag and it's been great...pushing a suitcase is a lot easier than dragging it, in my situations.

Yeah, my dad has a complete set of Tumi Luggage, and the quality/features are incredible. It's wayy out of my price range though.

Seems like the people in this thread who have cheap luggage have no complaints. If you're a business traveler it might be worthwhile to spend the money on expensive luggage, but for the average person I really don't think it's necessary.

And no, my wheels haven't melted yet.

Im pretty set on going to Target after work and picking some things up there.

This might have been said already but check out discount stores like marshalls, tjmaxx etc... for name brand luggage at about 1/3 of the price. Selection will be random but I got a really nice large suitcase for $60 that I priced at $150~200 anywhere else.
