The 1939 numbers might be worse. $3,800 in 1939 adjusted for inflation is still only $63,835.

They used median instead of mean because it's a skewed distribution.

For example, the median household income in the US is around $50k, whereas the mean (average) is around $70k. It gets pulled up because you can't make negative dollars (well...), but there are a lot of people making millions.

Thus, median is a better single-number measure of what "most" people will make. Or, in this case, how long they'll last.

He must have had some kind of hand-operated throttle so that he could walk it up (he couldn't simply step out if he drove it up). From there, it's either a malfunction or operator error.
