That's actually nice of them to provide that - it robs them of revenue, but hey not your problem.
There's one at the Atlanta airport too. Not sure how long it has been there. I suppose it reduces congestion on the loop road from people stuck driving around in circles, waiting for someone to come outside. They won't let you park in the pick-up area to wait for someone.

It was unbelievably stressful when I had to drive around dozens of times while waiting for my sister to come out of the airport and get in my car. While driving around, I was constantly merging and merging and merging...and it was often difficult to merge with buses, lots of traffic, and poor visibility. Sometimes, I was forced to go the wrong way and had to find my way back onto the loop road. My phone finally died and I had no way to know if there was a change of plans and I might not find her at the front at all. The stress from that day...it still gives me nightmares just thinking about it.

SeaTac is the least douch-ey airport I know of. The Seattle Port Authority also mandate prices in the secure zone; you may only charge inside the secure zone what you charge outside. If starbucks charges $3 for a coffee in Seattle, they CANNOT charge $10 in the airport. They MUST charge $3. The workaround are these places like Hudson that don't exist outside the secure zone though...but I feel like they aren't a big thing in SeaTac; if you want some gum, it's cheaper to go to the Starbucks or something.

How the hell did he think that was a good idea?

It's a good thing he didn't try to back it over the edge!

"Idea?" His idea was to stop on the platform and then lower the platform before pushing off. Obviously, he didn't mean to have it go off when it did. It was probably heavier than his usual loads and, thus, had more momentum.

Were those ceramic tiles or something else? How heavy do you think that shit was?

I told my coworker this morning that I thought they were concrete slabs for a walkway. It is clear that the reason he hung on was a feeble attempt and counter-balancing, which is another indication that he simply under-estimated the weight.

"Grossly underestimated" is more like it.

That's a damn fine thing.

However, I think the idea of cell phone lots at airports isn't really tied into Sea-Tac being more awesome than others.

I know DTW (Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, aka Detroit Metro Airport) also provides cell phone lots.

The idea isn't robbing an airport of any money. Realistically, parking in a lot to pick someone up is a very rare need, and few people do it. I've only parked when we had a large group welcoming home a buddy from a deployment.

A lot of people will crowd around the departures zone where the idea is to quickly pull up, get the passenger and bags in the car, and drive off. Crowding around that makes it far more of a mess - it always is, but generally, a cell phone lot is intended to minimize congestion there. If you actually are going to go inside the airport to grab them, that's what the paid parking is for.
