Never understood how someone working the sound board as "DJ" could earn 5 figures a night -- how/why is that possible?

exactly... a great job if you can get it.... as long as the people in the crowd are hyped up on ecstasy you can get away with making good money for doing something a computer can do. Only thing a computer can't do is where a stupid mask and put yo arms in the air.
Just spoke to a real DJ and here is the scoop.
DJ. $350 a night
DJ that coordinates audio and video too. Creates new mixes. $1,000.00 a night
DJ that actually does create new music, recorded and on-the-fly, 5 figures, in the city.
OK, so how is a guy working a sound board CREATING NEW MUSIC on the fly. Is he playing any actual instrument? No, he/she is just patching together canned music from someone else.
