Weddings I can understand, mostly because I had to go through that shit. But we didn't pay them anywhere near 5 figures.

Just spoke to a real DJ and here is the scoop.
DJ. $350 a night
DJ that coordinates audio and video too. Creates new mixes. $1,000.00 a night
DJ that actually does create new music, recorded and on-the-fly, 5 figures, in the city.

knowing WHEN to play each song is actually pretty valuable, and can translate into a lot of money gained/lost for a club.

The best DJ's can "work a dance floor into a frenzy" and keep customers coming back. A playlist on shuffle won't do that.

OK, so how is a guy working a sound board CREATING NEW MUSIC on the fly. Is he playing any actual instrument? No, he/she is just patching together canned music from someone else.
