If two bullets struck each other in flight it's likely that both would have been travelling somewhere near the same speed so one bullet going through another like that is ... unlikely. I suspect one bullet was set as a stationary target and the other shot into it.
Had two bullets hit each other in flight they would likely have been mangled beyond recognition.
