That LITERALLY happened today too

http://www.apple.com/smart-keyboard/

Read the language on Apple's page. :awe:

The only thing interesting and new is the use of a full cover over mechanical keys, whereas Microsoft's Type Cover has traditional exposed/separated keys, making it possible for stuff to get into the underlying switches and electronics.

Which Apple was smart about that, and hopefully Microsoft adopts it, but everything else might as well be like:
"hey, thanks Microsoft for the wonderful idea! Oh, hey, you see we even include a proper pressure-sensitive stylus too! You like that? People will think the iPad Pro is genius!"

$179?! No pointing device, doesn't double as an external battery, doesn't add I/O for SD cards or media, no storage for Apple Pencil = $179?! Yikes. Sure, the keyboard and folding mechanism is durable, but you can't even replace the microfiber when it wears like a SmartCover would. It should be included/bundled.

$100 for the Apple Pencil must be a joke too. That Lightning port will get snapped off almost right away if they actually expect it to rigidly protrude from your portable device for charging. Does the cap stow on the tip when removed for charging, at least? Could they make it work with the 6S Plus too?

Looks like they didn't even get the ipad properly seated in keyboard cradle on the side-view pic?

The only thing we didn’t reinvent was the alphabet.
The new Smart Keyboard for iPad Pro.
For many, a keyboard remains a convenient way to get work done or get thoughts down. The new Smart Keyboard completely reimagines this centuries‑old invention to add even more flexibility to iPad Pro. With new technologies that free you from switches, plugs, and even pairing, the Smart Keyboard is the perfect blend of full‑size utility and outstanding portability.

When you look at the side view, click "Watch" and "Cover" - that looks to be how it connects.

Which looks far worse than the Type Cover's approach to connection.

I stand by the notion that the key layout style is excellent, but that's the only thing they did better. Perhaps because they removed the touchpad, all the keys also have more room so it'll feel like a better typing experience in general, but that's not anything other than focusing the design for the use cases.

It's actually weird to think that a product that Apple came out with later, is really on equal footing at the end of the day with something Microsoft released a few years ago. The key design may be better, but everything else is the same or worse in reality.
