Related to a neat trick if you want to see the contrast of good adapted night vision against that when freshly plunged into darkness:

- cover up one eye for awhile, and expose the other eye to a lot of light
- then, turn the lights out, and switch which eye is covered

It's been suggested some pirates used patches for this reason, and not because of a missing eye. I have no clue as to the validity of that.

We used this as a demonstration to show that it takes time for the eyes to adjust to darkness, but once they do, you see that much better. Also, how even just a little light can totally kill that adaptation to darkness. Thus, use a red lens on a flashlight if you need more illumination but need to keep your night vision.
