Gate has a telephone keypad. There aren’t too many symbols available on a telephone keypad.

Well really it wouldn't matter if there were no symbols at all, but in this case the system is designed to receive the pound symbol before code entry.
I've seen it on regular safes too.

Some systems require pound or asterisk before the code, others do not. People who have to use the codes aren't intentionally programming the code to include it, it's required by the security keypad itself.

I must verify this with a colleague who is a voluntary firefighter.

But here in the Netherlands, i think that the pressure is not that high, just enough volume/second is needed. The pump is in the firetruck and delivers the pressure.Sometimes, when there is no fire hydrant nearby, water is taken from another fire truck or from a local canal.

Yeah some firetrucks here in the states have integrated water tanks and/or internal pumps, but generally hydrants are so readily available and most regions have plenty of gravity pressure or, if not gravity, then the water facilities pump with a certain amount of pressure as well through the pipes.
