This was once TV and we watched it
True story:
During the halcyon days of the summer of 1989, I was enrolled against my will in the YMCA day camp. Basically hated every minute of it, but that's besides the point. One day it was raining and so we weren't able to "enjoy" the out of doors direct heat bath archery games and all that nonsense, so the teenaged counselors hatched a plan for us: "We're going to see the Batman movie, kids!"
...."OMG YES YES YES YES YES WHOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAA!" etc etc. You may recall that this is the summer that Tim Burton's wonderful Batman was released in theaters. ...still maybe the best Batman movie ever, but whatever.
So I and most others sat patiently under the sheltered structure while the counselors went away to plan the logistics, as we certainly expected some buses to show up and load us up, but buses never materialized. Instead, the counselors carted in 3 large coolers of that awful bug juice, several bowls of microwave popcorn., and a small cart with a giant fishbowl Zenith TV and a VHS player.
"You kids ready for...BATMAN??!!" screamed over-excited pimply ratface counselor.
"YYESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!" But uh, wait. what's the deal with the TV? You guys got a bootleg somehow or something? Is this going to look like shit on the TV? wtf man....
Now, I was very familiar with the Adam West Batman series. I grew up on Saturday morning reruns of it. ...so I wasn't all that surprised when he put the tape in, and a purple "Batman: The Movie!" title popped up, and then the expected cartoon intro...my first introduction to a never-exploding giant novelty bomb and, of course, BAT SHARK REPELLENT.
This was the most disappointing day of my life.
