I like the part where he cut in front of the bear, turning his back on it mere feet away from him. You just don't do that, regardless of body language. Putting himself in a corner and then getting a back off poke too, haha, such an idiot. May it become a cautionary tale for the children of that family. "Be careful, remember the time grandpa almost got mauled at a cook out? Some bears aren't shy. Oh you haven't seen it? Here"

You don't want to be around when any bear feels it needs to fight. A bear smaller than that messed up my dad when I was a teen. Black bears aren't up there with polar bears or grizz, but you're still talking about more than twice the bite force of a wolf. More than a kangal, by several hundred PSI I do believe. Getting slapped by a bear, for real, tends not to end well for the slapped.

Really hope we don't see others try to emulate that just to make their own upload.

He also just taught a bear it can take a swipe at a human with no repurcussions.

That was bear for 'I'm leaving because I want to, not because you're telling me to.' He sat on his butt as a statement first, that swipe was the bear equivalent of tapping someone on the chest with an index finger and saying 'back off.' I don't believe it was meant as a direct challenge, bear understood it was outnumbered by things that weren't running for their lives - but there was an element of a 'Do we have a problem here?' type warning. Luckily the cigar man there played it correct, likely without knowing it. He kept his volume low, his movements mostly slow, but he showed comfort moving inside that bear's bubble. That's exactly how another bear of comparable size and age would handle him. He ignored the tap, even without benefit of hair and hide, which is what an unimpressed bear would do. If he had started yelling and kicking at the bear or did a stumbling run he'd probably have gotten nipped a few times. What the bear saw and heard was 'Idk man, do we?' with the constant chatter of other humans in the background.

I'd guess that bear has met people before, that no one got loud or had dogs with them. Dogs and whistles people. I know people in Maine who keep rubber buckshot handy expressly to make bears associate humans with discomfort and the need to stay the hell away. I had one pay a visit to my garage the other week, left muddy paw prints on one of the doors giving the place a sniff. Going by height of the marks I'd say it's roughly the size of the one in the clip. Might be time for me to order some rubba.

I've also seen nail strips used in northern climes, I think usually for nosy grizzlies but I'm sure it'd work dandy on black bears too.
