Raising the rail grade would be very expensive. You can't just raise it 4 feet higher 50 feet on each side of the bridge...the rail companies would never stand for that...maybe 1/4 mile on each side...or 1/2 mile.

Signs are a lot cheaper and the city isn't isn't liable so....
Think of the greater good : No repairs needed or even discarding trucks to the scrapyard, no insurance policies that rise in monthly costs over the years, no traffic jams because of the accidents, no people that arrive late on work resulting in lost customers or ending up in lawsuits. No human hospitalization needed, no deaths in the worst case scenarios... And the best of all : No paint needed for the bridge protection bar.

Youtube clip said the rail companies weren't interested. As alterations go I've heard of a lot worse. Sounds like another great reason to nationalize the tracks. We'd finally get somewhere with rail car safety too.

We have a mountain road in VT with much the same problem. Rather than a low bridge it's some paved but extreme turns between gigantic boulders. Small trucks can make it, but without fail and despite all the signs and lights, every year many 18 wheelers give a shot and get stuck.

Too many idiots out there trust google maps over their own damn eyes.

Someone asked India's billionaire Ratan Tata what was a life-changing moment that made you feel the happiest?
Ratan Tata replied that I also made wealth, resources, lived in the most expensive houses in the world, bought expensive things in my life. Then the time came when India had 95% control of African oil in my hands.
Even being the owner of a steel mill, I have not had the happiness I could imagine.
But one day my friend said let's go to give wheelchairs to disabled children, so I bought 200 wheelchairs then we distributed the wheelchairs among the children. At that time I saw a strange happiness on the faces of the children. Children were playing here and there. When I saw this wave of joy, I felt like I came to a park where children are having a picnic.
When I decided to leave, a child came and hugged my leg. I pushed him away a couple of times but he kept clinging and started looking at me carefully. I asked the child, what else do you want?
Then the answer of this kid, that moment changed my view.
"I want to remember your face so when i meet you in heaven, I can thank you again."

They did raise it 8", maximum allowed due to other bridges nearby.
I fully understand and agree. It is really difficult. And of course the bridge warning signs are there, when looking only from that point of view you are totally right. But we all know how human civilization works. People are tired that still have to perform duties. People still jump behind the wheel. Humans have emotions, diseases. Now we got as extreme example, SARS-CoV2 with the brainfog issues. The flu causes people to have less attention. Heavy rain, heavy snowfall. A lot of uncontrollable variables can limit the view of the driver. The point is, when safety measures are needed. Might as well do them properly. Our society is pushing people beyond healthy limits which makes those bridge warning signs not sufficient , especially when looking at all those youtube videos with all the evidence that the bridge warning signs do not help.

The reason why our society is pushing people beyond healthy limits is because of greed, laziness, lack of compassion, lack of the desire to make intelligent decisions. All that jazz. It is standard and has been for millennia. The positive hard workers and the positive thinkers perform and create until they are overruled by people with fatalistic views and who only want to feel constant pleasure. Which is biologically impossible for humans at least and for almost every life form on Earth. The fatalistic people keep seeking more and more constant (artificial) pleasure which is where all our scary stories are based upon for thousands of years... Only one thing works : Work-Reward but evenly distributed among people. We are wired with a reward center for a reason...
